We are so saddened today to learn of the passing of our dear furiend Mr. Darcy.

We did not know this beautiful Great Dane for very long, but there was something about him that really touched our hearts. Those big dogs have such gentle ways. Please go over and send some good thoughts to his humans. We know how much it meant to us when so many of you were there for us when we lost our sweet Dakota. So many losses - we all need to go hug our pets and humans and tell them how much we love them.

**********

Here is the hunter relaxing after his big adventure.

Many of you have been speculating about what Thunder caught the other day. We aren't 100% sure but we do know it was not a squirrel - no evidence whatsoever of a bushy tail. Squirrels rarely are ever spotted in our neighborhood, and we have never seen one in our yard. Our trees are still pretty small, and they don't produce any nuts or berries to entice the critters to come in.

We are pretty sure TD got a - gasp - baby bunny. We sure don't condone that sort of behavior here but dogs do have that inborn natural instinct to hunt prey. Mom thinks that there is a nest in the sideyard at our neighbor's. Thunder has been camped out next to our fence for days. These next two photos aren't too clear as they were taken from inside. But you get the idea.

We fully expected some regurgitation from TD, but none whatsoever. He showed no signs of being sick and had no trouble eating his dinner. The poop detectives (Mango wondered about this) report that all was fine except for the appearance of a bit of furriness.

And where was Mr. Phantom throughout all of this excitement? You guessed it.

All snuggled down in his crate with his blankie.

Woos,
Photobucket

  2. We said goodbye to Mr. Darcy too and our hearts are heavy.

I am most interested to learn what you might have eaten. My momma had a bassett hound that ate baby birds. Momma was horrified, but it surprised her so much that the deed was done before she could react.

  3. We have a problem with bunnies trying to live in the rock pile. We do our best to chase them away before the dogs discover them, but they sure are persistent.

  4. Thoughts and prayers to Mr. Darcy's family as he will be missed.

On a side note, what size of crate do you use for the dogs? I think my poor Rocco is outgrowing his.

  5. TD you and sweetie need to hang out - she catches everything - she got a seagull on the beach over the weekend - mommy yells at her and tries to get it back but it never works!!

  6. We are glad to hear Thunder Dunder recovered nicely from his Lapin de bébé snack. I was a little concerned.

Our sympathies go out to Mr. Darcy's family. They did everything they possibly could.

  7. Momma prefers that we get our bunny from a can but if a bunny is stupid enough to enter our backyard.........things happen.

We stopped and left a message for Mr Darcy's family.

  12. LOL well there are people that pay good money to feed their dogs rabbits lol.

I was wondering if he was as quick as Bonzo our angel bernese mountain dog. Bonzo caught several mice and rats in the fields around our home in Switzerland when we lived there lol. He would put any cat to shame LOL.

  14. Our Mommy is hopeless she is appalled that you would catch and eat a baby bunny Thunder. We can hear her muttering BAD DOG!!!!!

We on the other hand applaud you. Socks caught a baby bunny when we (Scylla & Charybdis) were little to help us learn to hunt. The Mommy took it away before we could eat it and cried cause she couldn't save it's life (what did we tell you she is hopeless) but we have been hoping Socks will catch another one for us. ~S,S,C & F

  16. Very lovely tribute to the beautiful boy Mr Darcy - we miss him already, but know he's now running free with the wind at Rainbow Bridge.

And munching baby bunnies - well, we can't help our instincts can we? We're just surprised there was no - um - reaction other than a burp as it went down!! Shows you definately got the stomach for it!

  20. We are so sorry about Mr. Darcy..
We are sad for the bunny but like you said dogs do have prey drives. That is what our herding trainer says. Some dogs have more than others.. Callie and me the Blueman have huge prey drives but we don't ever hurt the sheep.. We sure like chasing them though..

  26. My sympathy goes out to Mr. Darcy's family. I am really so sorry to hear that news.

A bunny huh? I was talking to a friend where I live today and she was crying because her dog caught one in her backyard...I had told her it's a dog's natural thing to do though but sad because bunnys are so cute. I'm just glad Thunder didn't get sick and it sure looks like Phantom is just taking it easy!

  35. We were also sad to hear about Darcy....we went by and left our condolences.

Mama says she will stay in denial and pretend that is was a squirrel that Thunder swallowed and not the furry baby bunny that we are sure he gives kisses and love too when he goes outside...

Mama is VERY good at denial!!

  37. Mom says the first thing she thought of when she read about Thunder's "snack" was "baby bunny" cause Star loved those too - they're gone in just one gulp.

Actually, Star had a taste for rabbit in all sizes. She only ate the stupid ones though, stupid enough to go into her territory!

  40. We were so sad to hear about Mr Darcy. We just met him and were hoping he was going to get better. :(
I think bunny snacks are super delicious, but Mom thinks otherwise. Was that maybe what was hanging around under your playset a few weeks ago?
Ever since my bunny-napping incident (where I tried to smuggle a live bunny in the house), Mom does a "lip check" whenever I come in from outside just to make sure there aren't any legs hanging out of my lips. hehe Moms can be no fun.

    Your pal,
    Titus

  41. Well, ESPECIALLY huskies have that high prey drive. It's amazing how wonderfully sweet and cunning they can be at the same time. Slightly scary if you ask me. but that's why i love mine. They are so much smarter than anyone thinks they are.

Oh well, TD, maybe mom can teach you to make nice with the bunnies or at the very least ignore them like Phantom.

    We still love you TD!

  42. Run free Mr. Darcy.. how sad. It always touches your heart. Hmm rabbit fully digested..no furry poops. Interesting. I think Phantom and my Mom need to be roommates.. she's always cold too.

  43. We hate to hear about the passing of another blogging pup.

We found a possum in the yard the other night but unfortunately it was on top of the fence so we didn't get to play with it.
