The Name Game

Today we are playing Frankie's Fourth of July Name Game.

First up, Phantom, our oldest sibe boy. Phantom is an 11 year old black and white Siberian Husky with blue eyes.

Phantom was actually named because as a young pup he had a beautiful mask. So he was named in the spirit of "Phantom of the Opera".

However over the years, his mask has almost disappeared. If you look very closely at his face, you can see that he still has small traces of black under his eyes. But the name still fits quite well if you consider the definition of a phantom to be an illusion, an apparition, something apparently seen, heard, or sensed, but having no physical reality; a ghost or an apparition. Phantom has always been a very aloof pup, not the one who runs to the human for affection. He prefers to be alone, he is on the shy side, and he is known to "disappear" in a flash when thunderstorms are in the area.

Nicknames: Phanty, Phanny, Phanny Bananny, Shy Guy, Picky Boy, Skinny Boy, Mama's Boy, and Blue Eyes.

Thunder, a.k.a. TD, is our four year old gray and white blue-eyed Siberian Husky boy.

Thunder came to us when he was about four months old and had been donned with the name Max. His father is Mel Gibson (Siberian Husky, not the actor:) and his breeder was really into Mel movies. Thunder was named for Max of the Mad Max movies. TD's huDad here in OP did not want to keep the name Max. So we tried to stay with the Mel Gibson theme and went to Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, hence the name Thunder. In addition to the Mel link, Thunder is mostly gray and white, and so we thought of storms and thunder. As time has passed and Thunder has reached his adult size, it has become quite apparent that maybe Max was a good choice after all. TD is a very big boy. He has a very healthy appetite, and the vet says he is a good solid weight for his body's frame.

Nicknames: TD, Thunder Dunder, Big Guy, Snake Boy, and Prince Charming

And then there is Ciara. Ciara is our seven month old red and white (more chestnut than red) golden brown-eyed Siberian Husky girl. She is a half-sister to Thunder with the same sire of Mel. Although she may come across to many as the bossy girl of the pack, she is actually a very sweet and well-behaved pup. Our biggest complaint is that she grew up so fast. There is very little puppy in her. She is a very mature and affectionate lady.

Ciara's name has no special story behind it. We just liked the name. Mom tossed around a bunch of names she really liked but it isn't always easy to get agreement from the Dadster. They both really liked the name Sierra but we all think of beautiful Sierra Rose when we hear that name. And we have a few furiends with that name as well. So with a little manipulation of the letters, along came "Ciara."

Clive's mom was kind enough to send us a little background on the Irish link of the name. She told us that in Ireland the name is pronounced like the actress Kiera Knightley. We pronounce is as "Cee Air Ah". According to Clive's mom, Ciara is a Gaelic/Irish name meaning 'dark' or 'black'. There was a St Ciara of Kilkeary, Co Tipperary (in the middle of Ireland) who founded a community of nuns. She died in 679 and her feast day is January 5th. - that is according to the book of Irish Names for Children. Somehow we aren't quite sure our Ciara will ever make it to sainthood:)

Ciara's Nicknames: Cee Cee, Miss Puppypants, Princess, Pretty Girl, Baby Girl

Just for fun, we checked at http://www.myrapname.com/ to see what our rap names would be.

Phantom - Grandmaster P Skinny

Thunder - Funk TT Slice

Ciara - Ciara Cherry

We thought they were quite appropriate.

Thanks for letting us join in the fun of The Name Game, Frankie. We send wishes to all for a safe and fun Fourth of July.

Today also marks our second blogaversary.

Woos - Phantom, Thunder, and Ciara

But since she is having a picnic and that means food I am OK with waiting till this afternoon to post about our names. We love all your names. 23. Hi Thunder, Phantom and Ciara - we think that Frankie is a genius, coming up with such a fun game! We've had so much fun reading about how our pals got their names. We haven't played the game in pupson as funnily enough we posted about our names just a few weeks ago, but we've really enjoyed reading about everyone else!

Wow Phantom - we loved your puppy photo. Our coats are starting to get a bit lighter as we're growing up too! Thunder, we think your name is really cool - you might remember we have a pal called Thunder too! And Ciara - sigh! - pretty Miss Ciara! We were captivated by that name from day one! Ciara is so pretty and poised, we think she suits her name beautifully!

  25. Happy Blogaversary!! We're so happy we met you.

I love the Siberian mask. It's interesting that it fades with age.

Tsar's mom was a husky and his dad was a lab/chow mix. There were five pups in the litter. Tsar was the only one with long hair, the others looked like labs. Two were solid black, two were chocolate and one was blond with a black mask. She was the only one with a mask and was adopted the same time Tsar was.

  38. Woo - We have really enjoyed reading everyone's stories of how their names came to be (even if we are a little behind doing it). We did like the irony of Phantom disappearing around thunder - and then there is Thunder.

P.S. - Phantom. Queen Natasha the Evil says she respects the aloof rule. Except every now and then you must just go demand a belly rub. On your own terms.
