Monday's Update - Fleeting Freedom:(

If you haven't read our post from earlier today, go below and read it first so you can feel happy for me at least for a few minutes.

Yep, back in the cone again. I had four hours of freedom. Then Mom left for about 15-20 minutes to pick up the oldest grandbiped. And I just couldn't help myself.

Yep, I got my scratcher going and made a mess.

A closer look.

Mom called the vet to see what they wanted her to do for me. They said it was probably best if she brought me in so they could see what it looked like. So off we went again.

The good news is that I didn't do any real damage, although I did make the area bleed and almost opened a couple of tiny spots on my incision. So the vet says another week of conehead. BUT the Momster says she is not sure a week is going to be enough. She is going to go with her gut next week, like she wishes she had done today. Moms seem to always think they know best. If anypup or human out there has any suggestions, please let me know. I so do not want to spend the next month in this cone:(

Sorry, Mom.

  5. Phantom, at least you had a few hours of freedom from the cone. We know that once you started scratching it probably felt so good you couldn't stop but we hope you don't do that again! We're glad you didn't injure yourself too bad though and are sending snooter smooches to help you heal up again soon!

  6. I have some extra wide ACE bandage that might work. Want to try it?

Or Puddles the jokester also had a good idea with some booties on those feets.

Ah, Phantom, you might be a sad boy but you are NOT a bad boy, just doing what comes naturally!

Um, I don't know what you should do. I wish I could help! Now I know why Dawn tells me not to pick at boo boos! Did the Dr. say anything about salt water?

  8. Now that's something of a let down, isn't it? Well, better in that cone than bleeding and getting infected. Yeah, I know. Easy for me to say. I'm not in one at the moment. Still, at least you have a soft one. Other furiends we know are at this very moment trying to get some sleep with a ginormous hard one. See, things can always be worse.

    lotsa healing licks,

    Lola and Franklin, too.

  32. Poor Phantom! Unless it's not recommended by your vet, you could try applying a little Neosporin Plus on the incision site. We often recc this at our clinic as it speeds the healing and has a numbing agent that will help stop the itchiness of the healing process. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hey there...
Sorry you are having such a hard time with Phantom.
There have been times in our household where it's been better to simply bandage up the culprit paw.
My vet here tries to keep the cones off as much as possible - although sometimes it's inevitable. Perhaps try the bandage thingy (under supervision) for a few hours?...but your vet knows best!

  36. Juno would totally know what to do with that cone: http://www.wilddingo.com/category/mastications/

unfortunately she doesn't enjoy flying because she doesn't have enough frequent flyer miles to fly first class, so she can't take care of that cone for you. but she can send lessons to TD and Ciara for you... maybe they'll help you out when they graduate mastications 101.

  49. Oh Phantom... I am so sad. I missed the happy 4 hours - how I wish that I'd seen the good news before this post.

I recently read an article about alternatives to cones. I don't think that any of the options will work for you due to the location of your incision but I'm going to read it again to make sure.

The "cone of evil" just won't go away. I'm thinking of you Phantom.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh dear! {i would have done the same thing.} Hope you are cone-free again soon!

    ReplyDelete
  51. We second the idea of Neosporin ointment!!! It does speed the healing. It must double itch because the incision is healing and hair is growing back in. Poor Phantom,,,maybe mom will let you out of your cone for a little while each day. So sorry, from the pack in the holler.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm pretty sure I would lose my mind if i had to wear that cone for more than about 5 seconds. Seems like cruel and unusual punishment to be going on 3 weeks now... there must be a better way. People don't have to wear cones. I say try any and all suggestions here. Poor Phantom.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Aww, Phantom, buddy! I'm sure sorry you're in the Cone Zone again!

  54. Ouch!!! Phantom, why did woo do that fur? Sorry you have to be back in the cone.

  55. Poor poor Phantom!!!
Yes I do have a suggestion! Mom can you take the cone off and put in on again?? When Bambi wore the cone I could get it off but not back on. So when I took it off it was just before Tom was coming from work so he could help me get it back on. When Phantom has the cone off you have to be able to watch him at all times. It DOES itch!! It itches and then trouble!!
Bambi was the smae way. When the cone came off she was in her crate!! She loves her crate too!!
When she came out of the crate she was going to scratch!! So if you can take it off and put it back on you can give him some relief!!
    XXOO, Fern

  56. Oh, poor Phantom! I feel so bad for you because I know you don't like wearing that stupid cone!

I had wondered if maybe you still might scratch. And now we all know you will. I hope that incision heals over quickly so you won't have to wear it anymore.

I know you've got the itchies twice as bad as normal since your incision is healing and you have hair growing back. My recommendation would be neosporin as others have suggested. It really does help quicken the healing.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sorry about the cone, Phantom. I have my paws crossed for woo so that the incision heals super fast and woo will be out of that cone forever!

Maybe Momster can take it off for sometime during the day like play n meals and walkies while u are under snoopervision. part from that you gotta live with it.
