Woe Is Phantom

So here I was enjoying a great walk on another beautiful fall Sunday in OP and look what happened.

I was ATTACKED!

Mom and I were just strolling along one of the streets in our development when a dog from across the street came charging down the driveway with his teeth bared all the way until he came face to face with me about 50 feet away from his property. He was one of those "invisible fence" dogs - BUT with no collar on. AND the human was in the backyard mowing the lawn. I tried to protect myself, but this guy was twice my weight. I just backed off as Mom yelled at him to GO HOME over and over. He finally retreated but had a look on his face like he wasn't done. Mom and I hurried along up the street when she noticed that my face was bleeding. We really didn't want to deal with that bully again so Mom took me home and cleaned my wound. Then she drove back to the house to tell the owner what had happened and to show him a photo of my injury. Of course, he had no clue what had happened, but he was sorry that I got hurt.

Here is another view:

Mom was pretty sure it was a small puncture and probably wouldn't need stitches so she made sure she cleaned the wound well and applied some Betadine solution to it.

This morning we had to go to the vet because Mom wanted to be sure she hadn't missed anything.

So, yep, you guessed it - I had to get my furs shaved AGAIN!!! The nice vet said he was going to try not to take too much, but I was OK with it because I figured I would do it in solidarity with my pal Luke (Luke had to have his furs shaved for a much more serious reason). The vet said there is a small puncture wound and the rest is a surface scratch. So I am back on antibiotics again for a week. Another half inch lower and I could have had some major eye problems.

So I guess this is another of those things that adds character to my pawsona, but I think I have more than enough character now. No more wounds, no more shaving.

Woos, Phantom

From Mom - This is a very good example of why I am always bothered by loose dogs and dogs on invisible fence. This attack was totally unprovoked. It is a good think I did not have Thunder and Ciara with me or this could have turned even uglier. In Overland Park, dogs per the ordinance are not allowed in the front yard without a leash or a "real" fence unless they are with a human who has "direct and immediate voice control" of the dog. Sadly it is neither obeyed not enforced:(

  1. Poor Phantom, so sorry about your injury and yses, you do have plenty of charachter without this.

it takes just one irresponsible dog owner to ruin a day or worse, when will bad dog owners smarten up.

To have a dog twice as big as poor Phantom and not realize where it is and what it is doing is a crime and there should be consequences to the owner of the attacking dog. Phantom and you should not be the only ones suffering.

    Get well soon Phantom.

  2. Mom Beaglebratz here - first, so very sorry that Phantom again is under vet care and meds, especially for this reason. Hope it heals really fast. Second - this is exactly why I hate invisible fences (I try not to use the word hate but in this case, that does best describe how I feel towards them) Whether the dog has the collar or not or whether the owner is there or not for additional control, if a dog wants through bad enough then there is not a thing that will control EXCEPT a regular strong fence (unless you have the dog on a very strong leash and you are just as strong).
Ok - stepping off soapbox now.

  3. Oh Phantom that is sooooo scary. We remember when Bailey was attacked - our mum was scared too.
We are so sorry this has happened to you for no reason at all.
We are always worried about dogs on their own too.
We think you have been so very brave - we are glad you have such a kind and caring vet and we know you mom will take the best care of you.
Sending you lots of basset kisses and hugs.

  7. I'm so sad that this had to go happen. I absolutely despise offleash dogs in places that a dog shouldn't be offleash. Poor Phantom has enough of his plate, he doesn't need crap like that!

Thank goodness it's not a bad injury.

  9. Dog gone it!! That makes me so mad. Here you are having a lovely day and someone being totally oblivious to their responsibility blows your day, evening and next morning. Phantom will always be handsome; nothing can change that but he could've been hurt and that gets me riled!!
Okay, this is Mrs. JP taking a deep breath and being thankful that you and Phantom are alright. Thank you, Lord for protecting them.

  11. So sorry this happened to you and that the injury is minor, it could have been much worse as you know.

Can you turn in the owner that was not paying attention. I can't imagine being in another part of my yard not knowing what my pup was doing. Irresponsible.

I hope you heal up real soon!

  12. Oh no Phantom my sweet woofie friend. That is just awful. You are so gentle and to be attacked must have been terrible for you and your mum.I am glad it was not any more serious and hopefuly you will be ok in a day or two. I hope that man keeps his dog under proper control. I think those invisible fences are so bad. Take care my friend and hugs to your mum.. GJ xx

  14. OH PHANTOM!!! This is just terrible. I am soooo very much sorry that you were attacked... for NO REASON.
In Ohio... if your pet causes harm.. You are responsible for ALL Damages... I hope your mom takes the VET (SHIVER) Bill to that stupid guy. AND he is a stupid guy. It was HIS fault not Yours or the other dawg's.
PLEASE keep us informed on how you are healing. In the meantime I will send you some of my EXTRA Strength Healing Vibes.

  15. Oh My! This looks terrible! I am always worried that we will run into an aggressive roaming pup when I walk 3 dogs. I don't think it would end well at all.

  18. Poor Phantom. Now we have matching scars.

The laws would be enforced if you call the enforcers. You should also present your neighbor with the vet bill. As a "responsible" dog owner, it's the least he could do - pay your bill.

    ReplyDelete
  19. absolutely send them the vet bill!!! i am sure it is what you would tell all of us what to do!!

  20. Doggoneit! We hope woo heal up quickly, dear buddy. Hugs to woo & your mom.

This is exactly why our mom doesn't trust those invisible fences - the only time her dogs were ever attacked, it was by a golden retriever who ran right thru his invisi-fence (unprovoked) and attacked Star & Rosie!
I hope the attacker's human offered to pay for the vet visit! And, I hope your mom reported it - that way its on record, should this dog attack somepup again.

  27. Ohhhh, Phantom! I am so so sorry to hear about this! I know you are brave and strong, but when some dog attacks you, and you think he might go after your Mom, its a huge worry!

I do think it should be reported to the Police since this dog may already have a record of biting.

You are a favorite dog of mine Phantom and I don't want anymore owies coming your way! Power of the Paw to you!

  28. So sorry about the attack on Phantom. We have an issue with a dog that charges us everytime we go by the house. The owner laughs at us and calls the dog back. They keep telling me the dog isn't going to do anything. The dog has crossed the street and came from several houses down barreling at us. He's not trying to say hi. Now they've gotten another dog and they both charge us. I'm trying to avoid a dog fight. We have a leash law, (all dogs must be confined or leashed) but it doesn't matter. The owners don't think anything is wrong. The dog has been right in each of my dogs faces and there have been a couple of times that the owners weren't around to call the dog in. It is a nightmare around here as people think in these semi-rural areas they can just let their dogs run loose.

And I've had an incident with those invisible fences. My dog was pulling me and went to the invisible fence with the dogs. The dogs never crossed the line, and our dogs were practically nose to nose. While I tried to pull Blaze back from the dogs, the owner stood there with his hands in his pocket, smiling, so proud his dogs didn't cross the line and never once thought to help me by getting his dogs away.

I don't like those "fences" at all. Didn't me to carry on, but I have a huge pet peeve about loose dogs and irresponsible owners. Too many things can happen, like what happened to Phantom and we know that was the last thing he needed.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh no! Oh poor Phantom and poor Mom - how scary and just plain stupid that this dog's owner was so irresponsible. So, so sorries that Phantom has had more furs shaved and more meds. And awful because some people follow the rules and it's usually those peoples and dogs who get hurt. Neighborhood meeting? That is really bad news. Give Phantom big strokes of love from us and kissies!

  30. This is terrible. Scary. And just plain wrong. Everyone should be able to walk their neighborhood streets without fear of attack. Physical or verbal. Actual or threatened. We are so sad to learn that Phantom was the example of just what can happen ... and we CERTAINLY hope the neighbors learn from the experience and that the beautiful boy heals quickly and well. With no lingering fears. We know Moma would be fearful for a long long time.

    Take care. Extra care.

  31. Hi Phantom,

We're so sorry this happened - you behaved so well in such awful circumstances we take our hat off to you (if we wore ones!)

Owners like that make us and FH so MAD! So irresponsible - seriously, how can you NOT know where your dog is or what he/she is doing?

We got charged by an off-leash GSD the other day, rushing us and bearing it's teeth and barking in a very threatening way. It was kinda frightening but FH shouted at it with her scary voice whilst we hid behind her - after a couple of minutes the owner appeared and started shouting at FH to ignore his dog because it was stupid and shouted at us to move on - FH was so mad and wanted to knock his block off but in the circumstances could only move along with us as she didn't want us to be too affected by this unpleasant experience. We were much luckier than you because we weren't injured - we sure hope you heal soon and we sure hope you send that irresponsible person the vet bill too.

I am glad to knows you is gonna be okays though and even glader dat TD and Ciara weren't theres!
Now in to my soapbox...I thinks we haves da same ordinances as ya'll. However, our idiot neighbors let their dogs in da front yard, mo fence, no leash and they attacked a rottweiler on his walk so I knows all too well that peoples don't listen.
I do also agree dat dis owner should pay da bill...but, I am on da fence bouts charges cux around heres you has to be VERY CAREFUL in doing so. You knows so peoples don't try to retaliate against your dogs and believe me, it DOES happen. No matter what you do or don't do we will be behind you.
Hmmmmmm...dis wouldn't be da same dog dat attacked Tank ...hehehehehe...just kiddin'

  36. Phantom, we are so sorry you got hurt. That looks ouchie. Us cats are sending healing purrs for you.

The Mom doesn't like invisible fences at all. Even when they manage to keep your dog inside (which they don't always do), they allow other animals to come in your yard and attack your dog. So she isn't sure why people use them.

Fenris has offered to be Phantom's bodyguard on your walks. He is trying to impress a certain young girl pup in your household with his bravery. The Mom thinks it would have been really scary if you had had all the dogs with you.

Phantom we thinks you look very swashbuckling.

  56. Hey Phantom,

I hope you are doing well. Incidents like this happen to us before and I'm always the victim. It's not nice and to be honest, the Missus was so afraid to take me for my walkies because she doesn't want to risk us encountering these aggressive dogs. Anyway, this is just a suggestion, can your mom bring pepper spray or perhaps an umbrella the next time when she takes you guys for your regular walks?

Give you mom a big hug for us, we suspect she might be a little traumatised from this unpleasant incident.

You are still looking handsome despite the little wound on your head. Well, the chicks will think you are one tough dog!

I'm glad your mom took you to the vet just to be on the safe side. That owie looks nasty. Hopefully it looks worse than it actually is.

I'm guessing you probably didn't because you didn't mention it in the post but I hope you passed those vet bills on to the neglectful owner.

I always worry about something like that happening to one of my boys. They're both chihuahuas so they're small. A big dog could do some pretty major damage to them if they really wanted to.

That drives me crazy when dogs are not on a leash or their owners are not paying attention!
This happened to us once when I was walking the boys, on a leash, and our neighbors dog came running out, not on a leash, and no owners around, and lunged at Sherman and of course he lunged back.

  64. Poor Phantom. You sure didn't need that to happen.

I have major problems with invisible fencing. I won't go into all of my objections, but I do think it can make a dog more aggressive. Just think how you'd feel if you got a shock every time someone came near your fence and you went to investigate or warn him away.

I don't trust invisible fences and I think they can do harm. Enough said.

Your mom did the right thing by yelling at that dog. I bet she used all her authority and it worked! I'm glad your injury wasn't more serious than that. Your mom could probably have called the police on that guy too...wow.

My mom tries to carry pepper spray (Sabre brand) just in case a dog tries to attack me. But it's hard to always be prepared, especially when you're just trying to enjoy a nice afternoon walk and that's the last thing on your mind. Anyway, I hope your wound heals up fast and the two of you can enjoy your walks in peace.

  76. Dear Phantom, we are so sorry you were mugged in broad daylight in your own neighborhood! We're glad you & your mom were not hurt even worse. We think you need a nice team of bodyguards on your walks: we suggest Mango and El'bow.

Abby the wannabe Legal Beagle [well, part beagle] agrees that the bad owner at the very least should pay all your medical bills. The bad owner should be initiating contact with your mom and offering to pay, if he has a lick of decency. We're very sorry for the bad man's dog, but we also agree with the suggestion to create an offical record by reporting the attack. Maybe being contacted by the police will cause the bad man to wise up, and if so it could save his dog's life. If not, eventually his dog is going to attack someone [like a small kid walking a dog] and the dog will get the death penalty.

Finally, mama suggests when you walk your mom should carry a nice heavy golf club. Doubles as a walking stick. And sprays are so tricky, depending on how the wind is blowing and how fast the attacking dog is moving. Your mom could accidently spray you or even herself.

Anyway, we sure hope you heal soon and don't have to wear another Cone of Shame while you heal.

Best tail wags, Jed & Abby

  78. Oh, poor Phantom. So glad it wasn't any worse and also glad you didn't have all the dogs. I walk my 3 together and have a time controlling them when there's a loose dog. It can be very scary.

  80. That must have been so scary.
I am so sorry this happened. Poor Phantom, so innocent and not causing any trouble, and then this happens.
I know Phantom is tired of "stuff happening"

  81. That is awful, terrible, horrendous. I can't believe that happened to sweet Phantom.

I actually think that invisible fences build aggression in some dogs - they equate seeing a dog walk by with getting shocked so they attack the dog when given the chance.

In any case, I hope that Phantom recovers quickly and that the bad owner actually controls his dog in the future. It's scary when your dog is the object of another's wrath. It's happened to us too.

    Hang in there, Phantom.

  82. Scary stuff there! Mom worries about us, especially since we are small but with big attitudes. We are not allowed to have fences in our development, so everyone has invisible fence thingys instead. You just neve know though! Mom is going to start carrying some pepper spray just in case - more for us than for her!

  85. Oh no, Phantom!
That's really not happy news! Just when your furs were growing back.

We are very thankful that it did not hurt your beautiful blue eyes. It's such an outrage to have bad manners. How can one hurt such a gentle Phantom?!

    Please be well, dear friend!

  86. We are furry growling that some-doggy was that mean to you. If we had been there we would have helped you stand up for yourself! Sending cuddles and good thoughts for you to heal quick.

We are thinking of shaving some part of our body in solidarity with our buddy the Luke. What do you think? Should we tell our momma first?

  87. We are so sorry this had to happen. It's awful and thank goodness the wound was not lower or deeper. This is something I always fear when I walk my dogs. I just don't understand how people can be so irresponsible. Even if a selfish person only cares about their own pet and not yours, it's so unsafe to let a dog just have free reign to run into the street. I simply don't get it. I understand accidents can happen even to the most responsible and eagle-eyed among us, but to leave your dog loose while you are mowing the lawn? Sorry. That's insanity.

  88. Phantom, we are so sorry this happened! And, very glad you are ok. Last year I had a similar occurance, and we have never walked in the same area again. You just never know, even in the areas with hoa rules.
Let us all be safe :)

  89. I hate seeing dogs off their leads even if they are in their yard. My problem would be my fear for the other dog. The Leuradales can behave like a pack when they are together and another dog entering the pack can be dangerous. I'm so glad Thunder wasn't badly hurt. I'm also glad the owner of the other dog was apologetic. Some people can be horribly insensitive at times like this.

  90. Poor Phantom! I got my furs shaved last week, too - for mom to clean my boo boo. Mom makes me wear a shirt most of the time, too, to help keep it clean..

Hope it heals up and that you won't have to shave your furs efur again!

  91. We're sorry you have an owie, Phantom! Invisible fences only work with the collar ON and even then, if a dog really wants to escape, they can ignore the pain caused by busting through the fence. We know, because we used to have one! Feel better soon,Phantom!

  92. Phantom,

I am so sorry, but also relieved at your wound. You're very lucky that that mean doggie didn't have good aim. I'm keeping my paw crossed to it heals quickly and your fur grows back!

Maybe your mom can take the incident up with the authority? It's very frustrating to know that there are laws to keep us safe, but no one pays any attention to them.

    Good luck,

    Angel Ziggy

  105. Oh no, poor Phantom. That must have been so frightening for you both. It is something I fear, that a dog may one day run over and attack one of my two.

I hope Phantom recovers from it quickly, and you too. It would really scare me.

Thanks for visiting my blog, it is so good to be back blogging. I will go read your latest post now. I have not been keeping up as I couldn't get into it whilst mine was on standstill. I saw Phantom had been hurt so came straight to see why.

  109. OH NO!! I'm so sorry this happened to you both! It's a scary situation to be in, but it sounds like you protected him well. And you're absolutely right about the no leash issues. Just yesterday a neighbor opened the door as Matt walked by with Nyxie. The dog charged them and there was horrible barky chaos but nobody was hurt. No contact made. Scary and unnecessary, though.

  110. Oh Phantom!! I'm so so sorry that I only saw this now! I feel so terrible - what a dreadful thing to happen! That looked so nasty - and us doggies can have yucky bacteria bugs in our mouths that can make even small puncture wounds turn into major ouchies so it's a good thing your human took you to the vet. YOu poor thing!

Hsin-Yi was so angry when she read your story - she hates doggies like that - we have them around us too. And they're not even on "invisible fences" - they just belong to owners who think it's OK for them to wander around the neighbourhood and terrorise other doggies and sometimes even people. It is irresponsible owners like that who give doggies a bad name!!! :-(

Hope your wound heals up soon!

  111. Boy this makes me MAD! What is wrong with some humans? I am glad that you and mom are both OK and at least the owner seems to understand that a bad thing happened. Loose dogs! Ish!

  112. That is TERRIBLE! I never believed in invisible fences, because while it might keep my own dog in, it won't keep other dogs OUT. Pfft. I'm sure that will heal up nicely, and you'll be beautiful as ever!
