Wednesday with the Woos

Can I get up here, please, Mr. Phantom?

He didn't answer me, but I took it for an OK.

I thought I heard something, but then I am not so sure.

Is that you talking to me, Mom?

Guess not, maybe it was just the wind.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

(Note from the Momster - Phantom appears to have lost his hearing at least in one ear. We are thinking it may be related to the surgery on his face that was very close to his ear. Poor guy, he seems to be very confused about all of this.)

Before you even think to ask, I swear I didn't chew that wood.

I think someone is stalking me.

Did you want something, Mom?

I see you there, but it's OK, go ahead, get it over with. Then maybe I can join the other two in an afternoon nap.

And thanks for the compliments about our new header - we owe it all to that wonderful lady from Zoolatry.

  1. Uh, who chewed it up then? Inquiring minds wanna know.
I didn't knows he was havin' hearin' problems. I has what is called Selective Hearing. I was diagnosed early as a pup.

  2. Love the photos, and sorry to hear Phantom's having hearing problems. My dogs have Selective Hearing like Puddles. I'm sorry this is all upsetting for him. I hope he can recover from it.

  3. You all look so lovely napping in the sun. It's all cloudy and a bit rainy here. Though I did hear the humans on the TV say S-N-O-W is possible later this week!

  4. It's not the surgery! ALL Boys lose their hearing around GIRLS! tee hee...

kidding. i sure hope he can adjust to that if it's true.

and Ciara: no, not buying that! you ate the railing.

I'm sorry abouts Phantom's hearing. But I bets he adjusts to it. He's a pretty most resilient guy!

  9. Oh poor Phantom. As long as woo still have woo's sense of smell, woo are golden. That's more important, so woo don't miss out of yummy cookies or steaks.
Ciara, we know woo didn't chew on that wood. Just like we didn't dig that big hole in the yard.
    TD, woo are just handsome!

  13. For those who have commented, the chewed wood is not Ciara's doing - for once she isn't to blame - TD did it when he was a pup:(

  15. Oh no....poor Phantom. That must be hard to just lose your hearing like that.

  16. Oh! More troubles for Phantom :( I hope you'll begin to teach him some alternative methods of approval. My old GSD lost his heaaring rather abruptly and seemed so sad at not hearing our voices. I wish I had known it was coming, so I could have taught him other ways to know "all is well" and "I am pleased, nice job"

Ciara... what else can I say...too cute for words!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Looks like a great day in OP land, we have had rain all day!

I think Phantom will adjust OK to hearing loss especially if it is just one ear. With Ciara, its probably definitly "selective", after all he has made a point of ignoring her most of the time, Yes?
Its handy to have if you are a guy who likes to do just what he wants!

Otis the Scottie had no hearing and very little vision left when he was 16, but his snooter worked like a charm. He knew food and people by smell. Taking care of a geriatric dog is a real experience, and Otis was my oldest.

    Cheers and hugs,

  20. It's still not too late to teach sign to Phantom.... Easy one's with treats first.
Sit, stay and come. All by your hand.
Amie was taught these as a pup along with verbal commands. Dogs read body language best anyway....
Ah, bless..... it is their blue eye's... makes me want to cuddle them... besides they all look like teddy bears. :-) x x x

  22. So sorry to hear about the hearing loss. My parents' dog, Chloe, is deaf now in her old age. She seems to not be too bothered by it though. Hopefully he will come around soon! Great pictures! I found the Santa Bandanas at Dog.com. I ordered Riley's crate and bed from them too before I even got her.

  23. I think that it was chewed by... EVIL SQUIRRELS!!!
Mom says that Baron, the dachshund that crossed the bridge at 16 went deaf. It was slow in coming and waaaay ahead of time they started using some.."hand signs" with him. He learned them and by the time he was totally deaf he could understand what they wanted by watching their hands.
Those were some beautiful pics of you in the sunshine. I was out in it today too. AH.. what a joy to relax in the warm sun.

  24. Poor Phantom! We hope he adjusts okay.
Of course you didn't chew the wood, Ciara! Thunder did it, right?!

  28. I see you guys have been doing what I have been doing ;o) Nice bootie shot TD! Just curious, but how do you know Phantom might have lost hearing in one ear? Maybe it is temporary as he continues to heal in there....hoping!
I know you guys are looking forward to cooler weather and it sounds like it will be here soon. I, on the other paw, am not too happy about it.

  31. Aww...poor Phantom. We are sorry about your hearing. Hope that is just temporary. We would like to give you a hug.

  32. The photos are warm and relaxing on a cloudy cold day here. Phantom, my friend, you have certainly had more than your share of troubles. You are still handsome and full of the most gorgeous spirit...and it is possible to learn hand signals for the important things. Mom and Dad's Sheltie, Sheena, went deaf and they were still able to communicate that way. We love you all.

  42. I'm sorry about Phantom's hearing, but maybe after a while he'll learn to use it to his advantage. Like only hearing what he wants to hear. As long as he can still smell it's not so bad. We doggies learn so much from our smellers.

    lotsa licks, Lola

  44. we know about bad hearing. our grampop can't hear anything and we have to bark really loud at him over and over and over just to get him to look at us.

  45. Don't worry too much about your hearing Phantom, Abby and Kona are mostly deaf (cuz they are really old) and they do just fine!

Oh, and Ciara, I bet one of those evil squirrels chewed on that wood! I know you wouldn't do such a thing!

  48. I'm sorry to learn about Phantom's hearing loss... I hope that it doesn't bother him too much. When our dog who lived to be very old was almost completely deaf, we used to stomp as we approached him while he napped. He seemed to feel the vibrations and wake up without being afraid. That idea might help you some day.

And, Ciara, you *didn't* chew that? Are you sure that you're being truthful, young lady? You are so cute that you can get away with anything so don't worry about it.

I'm jealous that it's still warm and sunny enough for snoozing on the eck. It's 12 deg and snowing here!

  49. Squirrels, totally squirrels that chewed that wood!! I know that look and it is not darling doggie chewing, but squirrels...whistle whistle....

Poor Phantom! Dunc tries to act like his hearing is going down, but he can magically the dinner plates from the other side of the house.

  50. Great post! I am so sorry to hear about Phantom's hearing loss. Sad....

    ReplyDelete
  51. Aw, poor Phantom, it must be confusing to have a sudden change in his hearing. Tucker has been getting harder of hearing too, we think, although it's a little hard to tell because he's always been as good as a cat at ignoring what he doesn't want to hear.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Nothing like a nap in the autumn sunshine. Sending big hugs to Phantom :-)

  53. You all look so chilled out to me, sorry that Phantom seems to have lost his hearing on the one side, you might fine useing hand jesters helps, our last dog started going deaf, he got very good at knowing what pointing was all about. The other thing I just remembered is try and make eye contact first, because he will not hear you coming which might make him jump.

  54. Sorry to hear about your hearing problem. I hope it rights itself. My big bro Simba has hearing problems, but he was born like that. Mummy has to keep reminding me not to sneak up on him. Most of the time he doesn't mind and enjoys the game, but sometimes he gets cross with me. I guess I will learn eventually when its ok to play :)

  67. Those look like summer shots, so pretty! That piece of chewed wood is precious, I love the little I WAZ HERE marks they leave for us. ;)

Phantom is the most beautiful and resilient dog, his face is so strong and soulful. He will adjust to his hearing loss. They age with grace but it's harder for us to watch them go through it and count their battlescars.

  68. We are sorry you haves a hearing loss Phantom...We understand how difficult it can make life. Besides having a moderate hearing loss my human mom is missing her eardrum on one side.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Well, you know, doggies do very well compensating for loss of hearing. My older dogs all go a bit deaf but it is usually gradual and they don't seem bothered. I wonder if he has false hearing and that is what is bothering him. Maybe a slight ringing? Of course how would you ever know, right?

    Mango Momma

    ReplyDelete
  70. Could it be a temporary thing due to his surgery, or perhaps from all the antibiotics he's consumed recently? Perhaps it'll come back. If not, most dogs adjust well to hearing loss. The poor boy has sure had a rough time of it.

  71. You look very comfy soaking up the sun. Hope Phantom's hearing comes back. If not, he will get used to it. Our Sasha sometimes has selective hearing, especially when she is on the sniff.
