Tuesday Telling

Tough times at The OP Pack for now. Many of you have been asking about the Momster and her progress with her broken arm/wrist. Slow going for sure. The stitches have been removed and healing is underway, or so they say. The doctor has removed the soft wrap and wants Mom to try to use her wrist where possible, five pound weight limit - ha, she can barely lift her cell phone. And no support for the arm other than a brace at night - not a lot of fun at all. Mom isn't getting much sleep because at night all the affected nerves decide to have a wild party in her arm when she tries to sleep. The pain is very bad, and she hasn't yet found a way to handle the pain meds very well. For now she is back on high doses of over-the-counter stuff. There are some other options but not without side effects. She also began physical therapy yesterday and is more sore from that now.

We don't want to do this, but we probably won't be posting much for a while. We continue to try to read your posts, but it is too hard to comment. We will leave a comment here and there just to try to stay in touch. And we will take all the crossed paws and good thoughts you can share. Tough time of the year for all of this to be happening.

If you are squeamish about looking at injuries, stop here, as we have posted two shots of the damage.

I pray for Phantom every night and have been keeping you in my prayers too.

I feel for you with the pain - at my hip's worst, nothing seemed to help. I kept going back to the dr. for stronger drugs and at the end, I think he must've thought I was a dope dealer or something. It just seemed like nothing helped.

I know physical therapy will seem slow going in the beginning but I hope it helps.

Totally understand about not blogging for a bit. You just get better, that's the important thing!

  36. I found these scar gel things that you can stick on the scar and it helps it heal. I'll look for the name when I get home. Yes! I found that the nerves waking up from the surgery to be most painful. Part of my thumb is still numb. I'm SO sorry you have to go through this, especially right now. Sending gentle rottie kisses...

  38. Ouch!! Do either heat or cold help with the pain at all? I had that nerve problem after throat surgery. The nerves in my neck that were cut started connecting and I'd get strange shocks for no reason. It's no fun. I wish we were closer so I could help out.
    Sue

    ReplyDelete
  39. Please know that we are really thinking about you and hoping for a speedy recovery. If it makes you feel better, I had nerve repair surgery done on my hand several years ago and my hand and wrist were in a cast because I wasn't supposed to move my thumb at all for the nerves to heal. When the cast came off, I was just stunned. I wasn't prepared at all for how it would be and I could barely move my hand. I had physical therapy that first day, but I went out to the car and cried. Fortunately, the exercises they gave me to do really helped and I started to gain mobility pretty quickly. I think the one thing that helped me a lot was playing with theraputty while I was sitting and watching TV or waiting for something. I managed the pain by taking the Vicodin they gave me only at night and sticking to over the counter stuff during the day. I know that it's really discouraging and frustrating right now, but I think you'll start feeling better soon. I do know that it isn't easy!

  40. Oh Momster...healing thoughts and crossed paws for you. I would suggest Tylenol or Advil PM which will help with pain and help put you to sleep. But, if you're like our Hu-Mom you will probably fair worse off with sleep since you would be scared of hurting it worse at night and not being able to feel it since you were put to sleep by the PM part of the meds. It's a tough situation to be in. Hope you get some sleep soon. How about using a small pillow to put under your arm for comfort and security? our Momster did that after she tried to break her ankle and it was the size of a grapefruit.
