Wednesday Woes for a Woo

What to do when Thunder doesn't want to eat?

Thunder has a voracious appetite and Thunder is never sick.  Mom says he has never once in his seven years turned down a bowl of food.  But since Saturday that is exactly what he has been doing.  At first it was just him leaving a little bit in his bowl.  But now he won't eat any of his kibble.  Yesterday he did eat some of Phantom's gastrointestinal canned food, but not at all today.

Mom took him to the vet Tuesday night where they determined that his anal glands were very full.  After they took care of that problem, they thought maybe he was just "backed up" and would be fine.

Meanwhile, yesterday Mom got word that the food that we all eat was part of a recall (second one in two months - we are so done with them now), so she thought maybe it was the food.  But we all eat the same food, and he is the only one who doesn't want to eat.

He also doesn't want to go for much of a walk, lagging far behind after just a few minutes.  After talking to Mom this morning, the vet said she wanted to give it one more day.  She told Mom to try giving him some chicken.  And after hearing about the food recall, she wanted Mom to see if he would eat another brand of kibble. So Mom brought home two different bags of high quality food and he won't eat either.  He did eat some of the chicken.

As you can imagine, Mom is pretty worried about Thunder.  He will now be seeing the vet tomorrow afternoon.  We are asking you all to send him some good vibes.  We are so hoping it is just a minor tummy upset, but it is still worrisome.

Update from Mom:  Some have asked what the food is.  It is Natura Pet's California Natural Grain Free Chicken formula.  The recall involves all of Natura Pet's foods due to a second occurrence of salmonella contamination.  They have not specified which food is contaminated but have recalled all of their products ( includes EVO and Innova and others).  The dog food specialist at our local store says that salmonella is an issue for humans handling the food and highly unlikely to affect the animals.  But I am very upset that this has happened twice in only a few months.  I honestly don't think the kibble is the problem, that is why I am worried about him, especially in light of the fact that TD is never sick and always eats.

  8. We are so SAD and Worried. Poor THUNDER... We have our paws crossed tightly for him.
    PLEASE keep us informed.
PeeS... What kibble were you using? We had not heard of any recent recalls. Word usually gets around Blogville. This one must have been kept very quiet. That is troubling.

  9. I agree with Frankie as to publicising the company with the bad food.

Maybe part of it is just hot weather and a tummy upset. I hope thats all it is.

Big hugs to TD and we hope for a quick recovery!

    Cheers,

  11. It's very worrying. Maybe Thunder is the only one affected by some food. I, Daisy, have a more sensitive stomach than the other two.

We hope it's just a minor upset too. Paws crossed.

  16. Sending only good thoughts and lots of hugs to Thunder. Our Shelby went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago. This is a pup who ALWAYS inhales her food and for 4 days she wasn't acting like herself at all. After spending $200 on a series of x-rays and blood tests, she bounced right back all by herself. Paws crossed that Thunder does the same.

  20. Poor Thunder! Anytime a pet doesn't eat is worrying. I hope that it really is just an upset tummy and that he'll be feeling better in no time.

  24. We are sending our very strongest vibes that Thunder will start feeling better very soon. We have been through this with R twice. He is like Thunder - he eats voraciously every day. For him, the first time we found parasites. The second time his dog food got recalled just after he refused to eat it. It did take a while before he would eat any kind of kibble that second time - my vet says that she sees this behavior sometimes, where the dog generalizes that all kibble is bad since one kind made him feel sick.

Sorry to go on and on... but I am hoping with all my heart that Thunder starts eating and walking tomorrow and it's nothing serious.

  29. When your best eater stops, it IS worrisome...but not necessarily something awful. We are sending our strongest White Dog healing energies and positive food thoughts. Maybe reading my tips for sharing a lamb chop on Tuesday's post might get Thunder salivating. Love, Siku and The White Dog Army

  31. We send POTP and big hugs to Thunder and we too pray he will bounce back. We had three bouts of this awful bug with Pip and four with Molly last year and as they ended up with blood in the stools is was very scary. Antibiotics , rest and lots of chicken and rice. We know how worried you must be. With ours every time they got over it within a month or so it was back. Upsetting, worrying, and expensive. The chicken and rice did help though. Maybe Thunder is more sensitive to the product than the rest. Hope that is what it is.
    Thinking of you.
Do pupdate us on how things are.
    Best wishes Molly

  33. Sorry to hear about Thunder not wanting to eat. Leroy does that sometimes too, but it's because he gets bored of his food so I have to add something new to it, but like I said that's normal for him.
Fingers crossed that everything is ok with Thunder, we'll be sending good vibes your way!

  40. Crossed paws here. I hope Thunder is just having a "spell" and soon is back to himself.

I am outraged with the food recalls. While our brand hasn't been involved, I am still considering just cooking for the girls...

  44. We are sending all our love and healing Chi vibes to Thunder. We hope he is eating well again soon and doens't need any treatment from the vet. Strangely, Bridget was exactly the same last week and hardly ate a thing. Mum gave her chicken and rice (which she refused) then tried smoked haddock and rice (which she ate a bit of) and then tried lamb mince and rice (which she ate most of). Perhaps you could try some of those things with Thunder to see if his appetite comes back.
