I Am Home!

AND I have had my dinner - I am not sure what happened to breakfast - and I only got a small serving tonight, something about not taking in too much too soon.

Not sure what happened today.  All I know is that I am vvvvvvvvvery sleepy, and I have this funky green thing on my leg.  Is it St. Patrick's Day already?

From Mom:  Ciara's MRI came back normal - good news, no tumor, no lesions, no abnormality. Diagnosis is epilepsy.  I was very pleased with the service received. The neurologist himself went with Ciara to the imaging center and watched the scan.  Unfortunately she had another seizure in the vehicle on the way back to the vet center.  They believe it may have been brought on either by the anesthesia or the stress of the day.

She can now stay in the study and started on medication today. The meds are either the placebo or the drug being tested.  This study is in the end stages of testing after several years of work, so a lot of good information has already been gathered about it.  It is very promising and they hope to get FDA approval once the study concludes. For Ciara, it means taking two pills twice a day through around June 1st.  If at any time her seizures become worse or more frequent or in any way cause concern for her well-being, she will be immediately removed from the study and placed on one of the available anti-seizure medications, like phenobarbitol.  If she is able to remain in the study through the end, she will then be taken off the meds and discussions will take place as to what route we follow at that point - medication or wait-and-see.

Tonight she is very tired.  This is to be expected and is probably the after effect of anesthesia and possibly an early effect of the new medication.  She may appear more sedated for up to two weeks as her body adjusts to the treatment (IF she isn't getting the placebo).   Many of you have said you hoped they would find the cause of her seizures.  That isn't likely to happen, but with the right medication hopefully we will be able to control them and let her live a happy life.

She was very much missed by her buddy Lightning.  I don't think I have ever seen him so quiet.  I am not sure Phantom even knew she was gone today, but he is pretty fond of her too:)

Woos - Ciara and her Mom

The reason for the 3 different wood type floors at Crumps is because our dad is nutty and Mr Crumpy is crazy enough to go along with everything our dad suggests!

  18. So glad you're back home again. I hope they can find another drug to treat Epi-dogs that won't damage the liver. My sissy was on Phenobarbital for a few years and tested every 3 months (always normal). But the last 3 months the Pheno ate up her liver and she crossed the Bridge within 10 days. It's a scary medication, but it did keep her seizure free for a few years.

    PawHugs to you, Ciara!

  21. Great that the MRI came back normal....and I'm sure it will take Ciara a while to relax after such an exciting day. Hopefully being in the study will bring at least some kind of answers on how to control the seizures. Bless her heart AND everyone else's! I'm sure Lightning was happy to see her back home - even with her St. Patty's bracelet! ;)

    Hugs, Pam and Sam

  23. Ciara we are so glad you are home...and it is probably best you don't remember it. Mom has heard from human friends the MRI can be very aggravating. I'm so glad you can stay in the study and feel very confident they will find a cure for you and all at the same time you are helping other furiends.

As for the green bracelet you might need to tell your Vet you are a Woo and not Irish!!

  33. I'm so glad that there were no tumors or lesions. So so happy. I'm glad that Ciara can contribute to the development of a new drug... Selfishly, I'm hoping that she gets the drug rather than the placebo.

  34. As a human who has epilepsy I can tell you that after a seizure, as you have probably ovserved, one is so very tired and loses memory of that day and some to come. Mine is controlled my meds and I pray that for Ciara. She is such a love and you know that she has always had a place in my heart. love and prayers from the holler..

  37. I'm so confused (I guess that's normal for me!)... If it's epilepsy, wouldn't you have known about it before now??? Or is this the right age for it to show up??? Sorry to bug you with questions! Just want Ms. Ciara to be healthy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lots of love to Ciara! While it would be nice to know why she has epilepsy, I would settle for the seizures being controlled.

Hope that she's able to stay in the study and that she's actually getting the meds, and not the placebo.

  39. I'm glad you have some answers at least and a plan for her treatment, so sounds good xx
