Friday with Phantom

Hello to all my friends out there.  Thank you so much for all your kind compliments about how good I look.  It makes me feel so good.

Mom told me you all saw me out for a walk.  I love to go for a walk, but I don't always go very far.  Some days it is just too hot for these old bones, and some days my legs just don't want to get moving.  But Mom knows how to read me and turns back home as soon as she knows I have had enough.  As long as I am willing to walk, she is ready and willing to oblige.

I really love my Mom and I don't like it when she isn't with me.  While she was on the cruise, I had to stay at the vet's with Ciara and Lightning.  Although they are really nice to me there and try everything to get me to eat, I must admit I don't cooperate very well.  While I was there, I lost a lot of weight.  Mom says you can see it in my tummy area and lower back.

Here is another view.  I have always been underweight my whole life, but the vets all say I can't afford to lose any weight.  I usually weigh around 44-45 pounds, and I should weigh about 55 lbs. So it was not good news when Mom came to get me and found out I had lost 8 of my precious pounds.

You know, Mom, I am always eager to eat treats, aren't they supposed to put weight on me?  You always tell Ciara and Lightning that they have to cut down on their treats so they don't get fat.  Isn't fat what I need?  Give me some treats, please.

I need to take a rest here, this whole photoshoot and talking have tired me out.

Pardon me while I take a snooze.

From the Momster - we have been working hard to help Phantom regain that weight.  He has managed to put about 4 of the 8 lbs. back on, but he doesn't make it easy.  Trust me, I try and try and try.  Some days are good eating days and some are not.  He is also having a harder time getting around.  His legs and back cause him a lot of discomfort, despite his tramadol, gabapentin, deramaxx, and Adequan injections.  Getting up and down are tough on him, but he still insists on sleeping on the hardwood floor - snubbing the comfy carpet and several choices of beds.  It pains me to watch him get himself down to the floor, slowly inching his way down and usually ending with a THUD.  But my old Energizer Sibe just keeps on plugging away.

Of course I do - I am getting geared up for the big 16th birthday celebration in November, only four more months to go.  Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.  Before I get back to my nap, I wanted to share with you one photo from the big family cruise - Mom has lots more but needs to sort through the gazillion photos.

  1. Keep pluggin' along Phantom. Now, we think you should get MORE treats, so that Lightning and Ciara don't put on weight and you do. Sound like a good plan?

And we'd like to say what lovely peeps you have in your family, bet it's noisy when they're all visiting. (but fun)

  3. We wish we could send you something that would tempt you to eat lots and lots so you can put on some weight. Sadly we understand exactly how it is with your back and legs....Mr Reilly is also having some major problems now and he's only 7. Our walks are only 10-15 minutes now :( HE also only wants to sleep on the cool wood floors but struggles to get up all time.

  6. Dear Phantom, you remind mom so much of our dear Char Shu. Of course you look nothing like a pug BOL but in his later years he only wanted Mom. Once when mom went out of town for a few days dad got very little sleep. Char Shu cried and cried for mom.
    Keep gaining that weight!
    hugs

  19. We were impressed by how well you looked after losing 8 lbs, too! You just start tossing those treats down your throat, Phantom. Mom says it's lots more fun to put the pounds on than to take them off. MOL!

Pee Ess - you have a lovely family!

  20. Walking, even short walks, are VERY good for you, Phantom! Let's get those last 4 lbs back on that handsome frame before the cold weather sets in (it isn't THAT far away, you know)! It was marvelous to see your entire human family!

  23. Oh you sweet boy. We say treats, treats and more treats. We know how it is with old bones. Poor Ancient Pip in her last year would go round the block and a lot of times not even the whole block before she wanted to go back. We hated seeing her get so old so quickly. Have a super Saturday.
    Best wishes Molly

  24. You are such a handsome gentleman, Phantom. We think you deserved to eat the entire box of treats!

  33. Oh Phantom, sorry to learn that you are not putting enough weight. Do you like roast chicken sprinkled with bacon bits? How about beef with offals? These are my favourite food and I've been eating a lot of these instead of kibbles.

You have a booti-ful family, Phantom. :) Great family photo.

  36. Hi Phantom! Well, you DO look mighty handsome to me. Moms are always concerned with what we eat. You remind us so much of our Davy and Mom and I always tried to get him to eat lots of things. One of the things he liked was rice, ground beef, and scrambled eggs - all mixed together!
That is such a nice family photo! Our mom can't believe how big all the kids look!

  37. Oh my goodness, what a lovely family! Have you considered acupuncture for Phantom? A friend had about decided she was going to have to put her beloved dachshund down because his back legs had stopped working, but after treatment, he is back running around - literally! Of course, that may not always be the result, but maybe worth a try?

  48. We've been far away from the internet so I just read all your posts to catch up.

I'm so glad to read about Phantom and that you're managing to put some pounds on him. He's such a wonderful dog, and is SO lucky to have such a bond with you. There's so much love in his eyes.

We had a Lab who lived to 16, and he insisted on sleeping either on hardwood or tile floors for his last few years. We never understood it... but we guessed that the nice cool surface felt good to him.
