Phantom's Tale of the Tail

Let me tell you about my day!

It was a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad day for me.

Lampshade time again:(

You can see how happy I am about this. So what happened?

Well, last February I had an ugly mass/mess on my tail that burst and wouldn't stop bleeding. The vet was able to carefully remove it and stitch up the opening.  BUT right below it was another ugly mass/mess.  Neither of these lumpy bumps were good ones - they are both the evil C.  But the second one was deemed to be too big to remove safely because it was so big that the vet wouldn't be able to close the wound after removal.  So he and Mom decided to watch it and see what happened since it was closed and not bothering anything.

Well, look at it now:

It is uglier than that dumb mole in our lawn.  It has at least doubled in size over the past couple of weeks.  It has also gotten a lot knobbier with a few extra growths.

And it started to ooze a bit last night.

Here is how bad it looks today.  I spent some time at the vet's with Mom.  They shaved the furs off my tail again, and cleaned things up a bit.  The vet said he wanted to try giving me a strong shot of antibiotics and then put me on antibiotics for two weeks to see what would happen.  This was not the vet who saw me when all this trouble started.  I have to go back on Thursday to let him see what is going on and figure out if there are any options.

Meanwhile I have to wear this dumb cone because Mom caught me licking that sucker.  I have left it alone all year, but for some reason today I thought maybe I could help get rid of it.

Then I heard Mom tell Dad that I may have to wear the cone FOREVER since the only real option may be surgery to remove my tail.  HORRORS!!!  Mom says that isn't likely to happen given my age and poor health; she isn't sure I could take that big of a surgery.

Woe is me!!!  Can you at least give me some yummy jerky?  I also lost some more weight so I need to boost my intake - jerky would be just perfect.

Woos (or is that woes) - Phantom

  16. Oh Phantom! I'm so so sorry to hear about your tail and the lampshade. I'll be thinking about you, sending good healing thoughts, in the coming days.

I don't know much about them but I am wondering if an elder statesdog like you might be deterred by something less than a lampshade - like one of those neck brace type things. I have no experience with them so it's just a wild thought.

Your eyes look happy despite the lampshade, which makes me smile.

  35. Oh, no! Well, if it's any consolation, you still look REALLY handsome, cone or no cone. We will continue to pray for you, Phantom!
Oh! And there is another option that might work -- it's a blow-up thingie that goes around your neck. Some doggies can still reach certain areas, but you might not be able to reach your tail. It looks like you're at the beach, wearing a life preserver -- do you know the kind? Have your mom email ours if she'd like to try ours or for more info.
