Another Update

We finally got in to see the neurologist after seven seizures in 26 hours.  He had been in surgery most of the day, but managed to fit us in.  Ciara is now on the Keppra anti-seizure meds that we had her on in the summer, and he expects her to respond well to it.  Today's cluster seizure was the impetus to this decision.  He agreed we can't wait any longer.  She may have a few more seizures over the next 24 hours until the Keppra kicks in, but they should occur at longer intervals.  There was some talk about keeping her overnight for monitoring but he thought she would do better at home.  He also said to move her to the lower dose of soloxine for her thyroid although he doesn't think the two are related because she now has hyPERthyroidism (high thyroid), whereas in dogs, it is typically hyPOthyroidism (low thyroid) that occurs with epilepsy.  Finally no anti-anxiety meds at this time, as we need to wait and see how she does on the Keppra.  He says she may now just be an anxious dog.  She never showed any signs of anxiety until we lost Thunder:(  If the anxiety levels don't decrease, we will need to discuss options at that point because a lot of the anti-anxiety meds shouldn't be used in conjunction with seizure meds.  Too much for my tired brain today.  In any event, let's hope this crisis is coming to an end and we have a quiet night.  And now I am off to keep her "awake" - doctor said we may be able to ward off the seizures this afternoon if we don't let her sleep until bedtime:)  And here I thought I might be able to get in an early bedtime.

Lightning:  No worries, Mom.  Just get the rake out and you and I can keep Ciara awake while you rake and we mess up the piles.

Thanks again for all your support.  It is so very much appreciated.  Just knowing you are there thinking good thoughts is very consoling.  Please forgive us if we don't get to your posts today.

Kathie

  9. Once you get through this night... perhaps you could try MASSAGES to try and relax her when she becomes anxious...
We HOPE that the meds kick in quickly and THAT will help her feel less anxious.

We wish we could remove this burden from her shoulders.

  14. Crossed paws here too. We are hopeful there will be no more seizures and you can all get some rest.

Anxiety is a monster we battle here too. Maybe once the seizures are under control, her anxiety will decrease?

  15. We're just getting around to seeing this, sorry we're soooo late! Oh goodness, we hate to hear this news about Ciara. We know that Keppra works very well in humans bcuz that is what our Grandpa Bob takes for his seizures. We will pray that things settle down quickly.

  16. It is sad to think how very much losing Thunder had an affect on Ciara. We have our paws crossed that she will start to feel better soon. There is also a plug in scent we have been reading about that is a causative - maybe that will help

  23. I don't know how we managed to miss all of this. We are so, so sorry to hear about poor Ciara and all the seizures, and are crossing all fingers, paws and hooves that she will settled down now. Do consider using some of those essential oils to help with her anxiety as they would not interact with the seizure meds and might help.

  24. Wow, sorry I missed this yesterday. Poor Mom and poor Ciara. That must have been so scary for her. We sure send lots of many purrs and some huge Hee Haws that things will level off for you Ciara. It is just amazing how animals get attached to each other. You both going to be our thoughts and prayers.

  26. We are sending (((hugs))) and prayers. Would soothing music help? Certainly non-evasive! Or would that create a lot of wooing?
Smile, please. That will help you and Ciara!

  27. Prayers for Ciara hoping the medication will stop the seizures. Comforting thoughts and prayers for Mom and the Woos.

  28. Kat how I am just sad to learn about the cluster seizures Ciara experienced. I can only imagine how tired and frustrated you must be...she is such a young girl. Whoever says animals do not grieve or miss a pal should be paw whapped. .

  29. That is so many seizures to go through in such a short time. Poor Ciara, we hope you have a restful night and we are sending over POTP and chi love for you!
