Thursday Talk

Lightning:  See, I told you I would hold your spot for you, Ciara.

Ciara:  Gee thanks, bro.  You know this is one of my two favorite places, this one and the one under the desk in the kitchen.  The kitchen cubby was Thunder's favorite napping spot, so it is only fitting that I make sure it is occupied for him.

For those that wondered, Ciara's visit to the vet yesterday was just an annual checkup with vaccinations for rabies, canine influenza, and DAPPPV, heartworm test, and wellness exam.  Dr. B. declared she is in good health, but could shed a few pounds.  She has been fighting the battle of the bulge since the last adjustment to her thyroid medication.  Dr. B. says it has slowed her metabolism quite a bit.  Mom doesn't know what more she can do since she has already reduced her kibble intake quite a bit, added those yummy green beans, and restricted the treat dispensation.  Now that Mom doesn't have to do a separate walk with Phantom:(, walks for Ciara and Lightning have doubled.  Ciara has a very sensitive tummy so it is quite the challenge to switch her foods.  Anyone who has had big success with helping their dogs lose weight - please let us know what to do.  On the very positive side, there have been no more episodes of the "we-don't-want-to-say-what-scary-events-for-fear-of-jinxing-things".  Her Keppra is really keeping things under control - YAY!!!

Some of you have asked how we are doing without our buddy Phantom.  Things seem to be going well for both of us.  Ciara hasn't had the severe reaction she had when Thunder left us so suddenly.  But there is one very odd thing that has occurred.  Lightning NEVER goes in a crate - he despises them with a passion.  But Ciara has always enjoyed her crate for naps.  Her crate and Phantom's crate were side by side with the openings facing each other along a wall in the kitchen.  Since the night Phantom left us, she has not gone in her crate at all.  Very strange.

Meanwhile, Spring has sprung in our area.    We thought we would show you some of what is happening here.

First up, see that planter on the table behind us.  Those are baby devil trumpets that Mom grew from seeds that Fenris, Tuiren, Socks, and Scylla's Mom Alasandra sent to our Mom.  Mom is amazed how well they have done, and she even shared some with our human sisters.  BUT they are poisonous for dogs so Mom says they have to be planted in the front yard so we can't get at them.  We never bother the plants that are INSIDE, but if they are outside, we like to help care for them:)

Speaking of outside . . .

You know how we love to run the fence line with our new neighbor pups Oliver and Dodger.  Well, Mom and Dad aren't too happy with the racetrack we have made in the lawn along the fence.

She decided to put up her crazy no-sibe fence, NOT in a straight line, but all sorts of zig zaggy to try to stop us from running.  You can see how well that plan worked.

So on to Plan B . . .

Hmmmm, wonder what she is going to do with these five forsythia shrubs.

Yep, this weekend they will be planted along the fence in the hopes that they will slow down the race:)  If the plan is successful, she is talking about going down the whole length of the fence.  Sheesh - that's no fun!!!

BUT we will try to cooperate.

Woos - Ciara and Lightning

  1. I finks we could run a blogsville book on how long those bushes last ! I reckon a month, maybe?
Great news about Ciara's medicine working, odd about her not going into her crate anymore. It'll be interesting to see if that continues, lots of food for thought there.

  2. Glad to hear Ciara is doing well on her meds. Hopefully the extra walks will help with the weight. Interesting about the crate. They all react so differently. When Greta died, I did not think Bailey would be affected too much. He rarely plays with the girls. But he got downright depressed for a while. And Hazel - after a few days of being extremely quiet, she got very silly, like she was trying to make up for what was missing with Greta gone
    hugs for you all

  5. Forsythia is beautiful, but doesn't sound like much fun for a racetrak. Heh-heh.
Your yard looks beautiful, ours is finally coming along. We've even mowed a couple of times.
Enjoy this nice weather before the rain moves back in.
    XOXOXO

  9. Ciara and Lightning, I bet you learn how to run a zigzag path up and down the fence. Too funny. But we have our paws crossed that the bushes will work.
Now my thought on crate, is that Ciara does miss Phantom and doesn't want to go to sleep with him gone. Where does she sleep?? Next to Lightning maybe??
Anyway, you all have a great evening.

  13. Not allowed to run along the fence-line...what's going to happen next? You're going to have so many NO SIBE ZONES, you'll have to get in your crates. Hmmmmmmmm...

We just came from Noodles blog and they posted about food from Chewy that they tried and then noticed that the weight was coming off.

  15. I'm glad that the two of them are doing okay since Phantom's passing. I've seen similar odd behavior regarding crates after the death of a dog. In our case, K loved crates until her older brother Astro died (pre-blogging days). On the day that he died, she became terrified of crates, and it persisted for the rest of her life. I never really understood it.

Good luck with the race track diversion! Have you thought of putting up fencing at intervals along your fence, but perpendicular to your regular fence? They'd just have to be high enough that the dogs couldn't jump them easily. It might stop the racing... (or it might not - your pups are geniuses!).

  18. Your yard looks beautiful. Ours is getting there but the grass is not as green as it should be yet. Ciara, don't listen to the Dogter, you are pawfect and tell Mommy to stop cheating you on snacks. I will send you a special overnight package just for you, but don't let your Mom see it.

  25. You must be so relieved that Ciara's meds are working for her. They are so perceptive, I'm sure they knew how sick Phantom was and realize tat he was leaving them. Mine react differently to those situations. Sometimes they want to sleep where the other dog did and sometimes they avoid it. Wish I could read their minds.

  26. Oh forsythia is so pretty in the Spring. While they might slow down the racing you will enjoy their beauty next year.

Ciara, were crates your and Phantom's special thing?

We are so glad the Devil Trumpets are doing good for you.
