Tuesday Talk

No mischief from us here today, but Mother Nature sure was acting up last night around here.

Late yesterday afternoon was pretty scary here in Overland Park.  We had tornado sirens going off for over an hour with very heavy rain, strong winds, and lots of thunder and lightning.  We spent a good hour tucked away in the basement safe area with Mom and Dad.  There were a number of funnel clouds spotted by people on the road and several radar-detected ones as well.  After the threat had passed, our human sister (mother to K, J, and C) sent this photo to Mom, taken by a friend and posted on Facebook.

Pretty impressive and scary, right?  Well, here is the really scary part.  This photo was taken one half mile from our home!!!!  It was at the corner of 143rd St. and Quivira Rd.  We live at 139th St. and Quivira Rd.!!!  As Charlie from Downunder would say - CRIKEY!!!!  That is way too close for comfort.  Quivira is the street we do most of our walking on.  It is where we visit the mini-donkeys!!!  That's our neighborhood.  To say the least, Mom and Dad were pretty freaked out.

This one was taken less than a mile in the opposite direction at 135th and Nieman, just east of Quivira.  One of our walks every day takes us along Quivira from the 143rd intersection in the first photo to the intersection with 135th.  Mom is pretty sure it is the same funnel as the first one, and so it must have passed right over our house.  This is probably the closest we have come to an actual tornado.  We sure hope it is the last.  It was way too close.  We are also thankful we didn't know it was there while we were in hiding AND that it did not touch down.

Although I was not too happy in that hidey spot, at least the rain kept the fireworks quiet last night.

Mom says I am working my stress out by doing a lot of chewing on my bones.  I still won't go outside for her after dinner - but she is just letting me work my way through it for now.

Lightning keeps telling me it is OK out there. The bang bangs don't bother him at all. Very strange given all the other things he is terrified of.

Can you see him back there watching and waiting for me to go out and do zoomies with him? I told him maybe tomorrow:)

To change the subject a bit, we have a bit of information here for any of you who have dogs taking Soloxine for thyroid issues.  Since early this year we have had trouble getting our order filled by an online source whose prices are quite reasonable compared to what we pay our vet.  We initially thought it was an issue with this one online company. But we are now discovering that Virbac, the manufacturer of Soloxine, is not producing any Soloxine at any of the dose levels at this time, and it could be some time next year before it is available.  The customer service representative at Virbac to whom Mom spoke told her there are a number of reasons for what is happening.  One is that the FDA changed the specifications for the drug and Virbac must get their product in compliance  Secondly one of the active ingredients has been unstable, an issue they are working on.  Those were the only two explanations she was given.  The lady did tell her that whatever we have on hand or can find "out there" is safe to use.  We have tried to find it at a number of sites online, but they are all on backorder.  The site will tell you it is expected to be available at a not too distant date, say 7/15/15, but the customer service department will tell you they do not expect to receive any for a long time.  Mom ended up buying all that the vet had on hand in Ciara's dose, but she had to pay four times the price she was paying online. We have enough now for about three to four months.  There is a generic form for soloxine, but she is hesitant to switch Ciara's meds at this time because we have been told that the generic may not be completely comparable in effect.  Ciara would have to take it for a period of time and then recheck the blood levels.  There is also a liquid version that needs to be refrigerated and is also more expensive.  We will have to make a decision in the next few months as to which route we will go.  We just thought it might be helpful to some of you to know about this situation.

So that's it from us today. We hope you all have a nice day and get to have some tasty treats like we are going to get from Mom as soon as she finishes with the flashy beast:)

Woos - Ciara and Lightning

  4. OMD OMD, that tornado was TOO close!! We live right in Tornado Alley and have those sirens going off a lot, but fortunately we've never had one THAT close.

That's unsettling news about Soloxine. I guess it's a good thing none of us need it anymore -- Cinderella was on it twice a day in two different doses!

  7. We are so happy you are safe! When Mommy lived down near KC the family spent a lot of time in their basement it seemed like. They had tornadoes pass over their house a lot of times. So she remembers how scary it was. They had a family dog then, and he didn't like what was happening one bit. Mommy was at school once when one came. And was outside playing soccer until the sirens went off and nobody wanted to play soccer, that's for sure! You stay safe this summer! It is scary and very dangerous!
Someone suggested a Canadian pharmacy for one of Mommy's meds not covered by insurants. Would that be a solution for you?

  12. Hi, those are very terrifying pictures, glad everyone is safe, as for the soloxine, my husky was also taking that, last month had trouble getting it from the vet, said that the company manufacturing it had moved and didn't notify the FDA, sounded fishy to me, lol, they switched her to thyrosyn, I tried getting any that the vet had, but they had none, so we are trying this, have to take her back next month to check levels and make sure it is okthanks for the heads up about it. :)

  18. That was a VERY scary storm. Probably good you weren't watching it! Way to close...but we're happy it missed you and your human family members!!! We think we'll stick to our frost.

  19. Dad's sister spent some time in the basement because of those storms too.

We're sorry about Ciara's meds. Dad's seizure med is a generic and he has been told to always take the same brand. About 3 months ago he had to change because nobody (including his online pharmacy Caremark) was carrying it anymore. We think that, along with the other changes in his meds, is what caused his level to be toxic last week. It's amazing how different generics can be :(

  20. How frightening to know it was so close. Glad you have a safe place to go.
How frustrating about the meds. Mom takes blood pressure medicine and out of the blue the last refill the pills were different in shape and color. they said it was because it was a different manufacturer but it made mom nervous. they have been the same for years. hope something gets figured out for you

  22. We are very glad you are all safe! We're supposed to have a big storm here too, but nothing much is happening yet. Just a bit of rain. It's been a weird summer so far.

(We know about drug shortages. We used to own a pharmacy. We would have gotten you a good price if we were still running it, but we sold it a few years ago and Dad retired. Is there a human equivalent of this drug? I can have Dad check it out.)

    Stay safe everyone!

  23. That is scary about the medicine. We are glad you have enough on hand to last awhile and have our paws crossed it will be easier for you to get soon. Poor Ciara, she just can't catch a break.

Ciara, we are purring that the loud noises and bad weather go away so you can at least enjoy going outside.

  24. OMC! That tornado was WAY too close! It gave our mommy a panic attack! She is so terrified of tornadoes after being way to close to one that hit buildings near where she was working in Topeka back during her college days. We're so glad you're all okay and we hope they never come that close again!

  25. I think that CRIKEY is the right word. That is downright terrifying. I'm so glad that it didn't touchdown and didn't hurt anyone. But I can imagine the terror...

I sure hope that the weather calms down so that sweet Ciara can feel safer. Shyla is like Lightning - scared of all sorts of things but not thunder. Odd.

Last, thanks for the thyroid info. Angel K took thyroid meds... so I know how important they are. I hope that the situation works out one way or another.

  30. Hey there OP Pack,

Sorry for some time no comment. I'm going to try to be around more often - I've even restarted Melon's Animal Adventures!
Thankyou for recently sharing those lovely photos of the angels in your pack.
Glad you are all safe, and hope the people in your neighbourhood are also.

I hope you find a good solution for your meds. It sounds like from other comments that thyroid/seizure meds can be at times important to keep the same, so it's good you're being careful. I take meds for my mood disorder, and had a similar thing happen recently, and since one generic was fine I've tried another also. I should remember to check with my doc next time that that won't cause me any problems. Scary isn't it? It's so hard from a consumer standpoint, isn't it? How are we supposed to make informed decisions when we don't really know how it all works?

Anyway, rubs behind the ears to everybody.

Fantastic photo though isn't it. Take care all. We hope you find some more of the medication you need too. No worries, and LOVE, Stella and Rory

  32. Holy Jodhpurs those funnel clouds were AMAZING! I'm so glad woo guys have a safety hideout.

Poor Ciara... the boom booms... It breaks my heart when pups are frightened. Neither of my dogs are scared of fireworks. In fact in Switzerland, they'd go off weekly in the summertime but not in neighbor's yards, at specified areas for show... which was rather close to us anyway, like a mile or less... The first time it happened, Loki barked and alerted. They were far enough away that i could take him outside and show him the lights and tell him "its ok, you're a good boy for telling me about the boom-boom. but they're ok." The next few times, he'd alert, go to the window, see the fireworks in the sky, the go lay down! Then after that, he'd simply go to the window, not even bark, and then lay down. That dog amazes me how easy it is to teach him sometimes. Juno never flinched, she was curious but not afraid.

But that doesn't mean that would work for every dog and DOG knows that Loki has his own pile of anxiety baggage he still deals with (the CAR). sigh. No pup's perfect in the fear dept. But woo two certainly come close!

Hope Ciara's thyroid meds get worked out. What a pain!
    kisses to woo both!
