Friday Flowers, Flight, and Fun

Do you remember when we showed you the creativity our Mom had out on our front porch?

She was trying to protect the little baby birdies from the hot sun.  We had a Mama Sparrow who built her nest in the back right corner of this planter. There were three eggs, maybe four, but only two hatched.

Here they are crying for food.  Mom said she saw Mama Sparrow come back several times a day for about 6 or 7 days. Then she seemed to disappear.  The babies just lay in the nest without moving.  Once in a while Mom would see them jump or flicker a bit.  But she was convinced that Mama Sparrow had abandoned them.  As each day went by, she got sadder and sadder because she could see the babies growing their quills and then their feathers, but they seemed to have no life.

NOW she thinks those baby sparrows had some possum genes because they were just playing dead.  Yesterday she was sweeping the porch and all of a sudden the two babies flew out of the planter and down to the sidewalk. They scared the heck out of Mom.

Here is the empty nest.  Mom heard the Mama Sparrow chirping like crazy up in the tree near our house. So she went inside to let Mama handle the babies.  They have not been seen or heard from since.  Mom says she must be really dumb to have thought those babies were dying when all they were doing was playing a trick on her.

Now we wait and watch to see if the right side of the planter will revive itself.

And NOW she needs to get back out there and finish sweeping the porch:)

Now for some fun for US.  Here are the three donkeys that Phantom loved to go visit.  The third one is tucked up on the left side of the photo.  Mom thought she would get brave and take us two sweet wild pups up to see Phantom's pals.

Ciara has her eyes very intensely focused on these two.

Lightning had his eye on the third one headed down towards us.

So how did our visit go?  Mom says she had all she could do to hang on to our leashes so we wouldn't both scale that fence to go play get those BIG dogs donkeys:)

Maybe we need to reconsider because this one seemed to really just want to say hello:)  Mom says next time we visit she is going to take us one at a time.

Later yesterday Lightning was really wanting to go for another walk to see his new pals.

"C'mon, Ciara - get UP - we need to get Mom moving."

"Hi, Mom, I am not doing anything here, just sitting by Ciara and keeping her company."

"Don't listen to him, Mom - he is disturbing my beauty sleep!"

"OK, OK, OK, Lightning, now I am UP!!!  So Mom, how about another trip to see those donkeys?"

  14. Wow! That was quite amazing to see those donkeys close up! Ghostwriter passes a farm on her way to work and there are donkeys, a few little pygmy goats, and a couple horses. But it's private property along a busy road. So the next time you go see your donkeys, say hello from us!

  15. Glad the little birdies are OK. Mom would like the birds that have taken over our tree to leave, cause they are making such a mess (bird poop all over the deck and lawn). Butt she hestitates to scare them off cause there might be babies.

  19. We'd love to chase some of those Big animals. They usually just look at us through the fence like we're nuts or something. SHE can just imagine your mum hanging on to you. SHE says three excited smallish dogs are enough to deal with....can just imagine two large--bred to pull heavy loads must be like!

  22. I remember those Phanton/donkey posts! They always made me smile. I bet my chi's would scare them from all their barking. Chico can be a bit mouthy sometimes.

I hope the birds come back one day. I remember once years ago when I lived with my parents, we found a bird's nest on the porch near the front door. The mama quit coming around and the babies died. My dad said that we probably upset the mama since we were coming and going all of the time.

And lucky you guys to see the donkeys, although I feel for your Mom trying to handle you both trying to scale the fence! One at a time may be easier next time - then they can tell each other the stories ;)
