So where did things go so wrong that I ended up looking like this???
Do you see how swollen my eyes and my snooter look? I was perfectly fine all day and even went for a long walk in the afternoon. Mom left for a couple of hours to pick up the grandkids at school and get them started on their homework while she waited for their parents to get home from work.
When Mom got home right before dinnertime, I was racing all over the kitchen, trying to rub the sides of my face on the floor, on the knobs of the cabinets, on the carpet, and along the sides of the wire crate. She said to me, "What is wrong with you, Misty?" I looked up at her and this is what she saw.
She immediately called the V.E.T. and told them she was pretty sure I was having a bad reaction to one of the vaccines I had gotten that morning. Fortunately for us, our clinic has evening hours on Monday nights, or I would have been off to the E.R. Mom and I got in the Highlander asap and headed to the clinic, which is only about 8 minutes away.
By the time we got there, my face was really starting to swell a lot. You can see the swelling had started to spread all along the side of my lips. My guy Dr. B. was in with another patient, but the lady Dr. B came out right away and took me to the back. They gave me a shot of something that Mom can't remember the name of to counteract the reaction along with a dose of benadryl.
This is how I looked after the injection, still pretty bad. I can barely open my eyes. And it continued to get worse for a bit longer. Mom and I had to wait at the clinic for about 90 minutes because they didn't want me to go home until they saw the swelling start to go down a lot. They take very good care of all of us at this place. While we were waiting, my guy Dr. B. came out and sat down to talk to Mom about what had happened. Since I got injections that morning for rabies, lepto, distemper, and canine flu, there is no way to know which one was the problem OR if it was too much at one time. Dr. B. said that my file has already been flagged as "vaccine reactive", and in the future I will only get one vaccine at a time and Mom will give me Benadryl before we get to the vet's. That will be a lot safer for me and it may help them figure out which one is the culprit. Dr. B. also said that this may never happen again, but we can't take any chances. If Mom hadn't gotten me to the clinic when she did, this story might have had a very different ending.
I had to get some more Benadryl before bedtime last night and again this morning. But all should be good now. My face is not swollen at all now, and my eyes are back to normal.
SEE!!!
Much, much better!!!
Thanks, both Dr. Bs., for taking such good care of our sister, sweet Misty - we don't want anything bad to happen to her.
But that Benadryl is still working on me.
So I guess it is time to snooze for a bit.
Woos - Misty
Note from Mom: I have heard of other dogs having problems with vaccines before but have never experienced it myself. From now on, ALL the dogs will get any vaccinations spread out over a couple of visits - the extra car rides will be more than worth it if it keeps my babies safe.
Wooo Misty we are so sorry to hear about the reaction you have had to the vaccinations. We sure are glad your mom got home to you in time and that the vets got you sorted real quick.
ReplyDeleteI had an emergency trip once due to swelling of the face and throat (I was struggling to breath) but mine wasn't because of vaccines it was some animal. We don't know which animal either a snake, caterpillar, centipede or scorpion. Whatever it was we were lucky to have our vet close by.
Keep getting better beautiful furfriend.
Wooos Khumbu and co
Misty bless your little Woo heart. We are double sorry you had such a scare we know you Woo Mom was very very worried. Thank goodness your appt was early morning and not late afternoon. You were able to get help lickety split.
ReplyDeleteWe are so glad your swelling is gone and that you feel better albeit sleeping.
My human sis's first cat Cali, had a bad reaction to some shots many years ago. But she didn't swell up she threw up within about an hour of getting home.
Hugs madi your bfff
We are so glad you got back to the vet in time to prevent anything worse than the swollen eyes and face! We have never had anything like that happen in the whole history of cocker spaniels in this house. Hopefully you'll be entirely back to normal real soon.
ReplyDeleteOh nose, poor sweet Misty, what a horrid thingy to happen to you!!!!
ReplyDeleteAre you sure that Mr Vetman was not messing wiv some Botox stuffs 'cos I've seen sumpeeps that have had that stuff get strange swollen faces?

Oh Misty!! How awful. Mom remembers when Puddles had a similar reaction to vaccines! It's so scary. One of our neighbor doggies, a boxer, just got really, really sickie getting all his vaccines at once. I, Osa, am having my check up next week. I think I'll ask to have multiple visits. I'm glad Woo are feeling the betterment!!
ReplyDeleteOsa and Otto, too
So sorry this happened and glad you knew what to do.
ReplyDeleteJust reading this my ma was getting leaking eyes.
I think you deserve a special supper tonight.
Smoked Salmon sounds good right.

I'm so happy you feel better... your dr. b was and is right... you are the sweetest sibe girl, that's for sure... hugs and potp to you... we hope all bad things run away from you and they never come back.
ReplyDeletewe had such a reaction with our husky frosty too... and since that time the mama asks for single shots....
Oh wow, how skeery! We're sure glad your momma and dogtors were on the ball and got you taken care of quickly. My aunt Gracie almost died from a vaccine reaction. We're glad you're okay!

ReplyDeleteOh yukky poohhssss.... I can sympaw-thighs, Misty, for I's one of those peeps who just can't take jabs of any kind, or even most standard medicines... it is what drove me down the ancillary route and how ended up being a homeopathic doctor. But the shots have their place and it sounds like your darling vet-man is up to the task!!! Glad you got such GRRRReat attention. Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
You poor sweet girl, I know that had to be scary for you and Mom. Thank goodness all is okay now and you are back to your normal, beautiful self.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you are ok now! We learned a few years ago to NEVER, EVER, EVER give more than one shot at a time. I doubled up on our cat once and he became EXTREMELY ill...now it is only one shot at a time...PERIOD! Oh and Dakota LOVES going to the Vet, he has no problem with it at all :)
ReplyDeleteDakotasDen
Oh Misty, we are so sorry that happened to you. But it sounds like the vet is going to get it under control. I have had some cats who had bad reactions to shots. We are so glad you are all right now. Have a good day.
ReplyDeleteOh Misty that's just awful you had that reaction to one of your shots.....now that they know this could happen, they won't let you have so many at once and no more swelling. I bet that was scary huh?! You were very brave though. Get lots of rest.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Teddy
Caution is the way to go. Luckily, we've never had any reactions. Glad it could be sorted quickly. And Misty we've always thought you were lovely.
ReplyDeleteHow scary! Thank doG your mom was on top of it, Misty! Take it easy and rest up.
ReplyDeleteOh, my gosh, that was a terribly scary story. We feel for you and your worried mom. We are very happy that you are back to being your handsome self. We certainly hope this never happens again. Lots of love to you.
ReplyDeleteOMP! That is so scary Misty! I am so glad Mom took good care and you are doing OK! Lots of RosyPoodleKisses coming your way!
ReplyDeleteI remember this happening to Angel Dory and remember how worried Mama was at the time...We are so very glad all is well and you are feeling all better, Misty!

We're so glad this scary story had a happy ending. That must have been so scary but it sounds like your vet did a great job helping you.
ReplyDeleteThat was very scary! Shyla recently had a similar reaction to a bee sting... and got a steroid injection along with a Benadryl injection. I'm so glad that you were close enough to Misty in so fast. Time is of the essence with that kind of reaction, as you know.
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, I have a friend whose dog initially had rather "minor" reactions to vaccines like Misty's but later had a huge reaction that eventually led to her death due to brain swelling. That friend is a writer who often writes about veterinary issues for magazines. So, she's researched it tons and tons - and would probably say that you might not want to vaccinate Misty again. She'd probably also say that getting titers would be a better idea so you know whether the previous vaccines are still covering her. I can pass along my friend's email address if you want.
Due to my friend's experience, we now minimize vaccines and never have more than one given in a day. It really is worth the extra car trips. I'm so glad that Misty is okay!
Oh noes! Poor gurl! I am so sorry that happened to you! Butts, so glads your MOms was able to gets you to the dogtors right away! I, too, went to the vettie last week and got two shots, butts I'm an *cough, cough* old gal, so no worries here.
ReplyDeleteFeel betters! and maybe some extra cookies....flash Mom the sad puppy eyes..
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
Oh my!! Sweet Misty we are so glad your mom got you back to the dogtor and you are feeling better today. That must have been so scary

So very thankful that you got Misty to the vet without anything worse happening. Hunter once had a reaction to all those same shots-although his was a racing heart during the night-we really thought we were going to loose him. From then on, I will not allow him to get any of the shots together. Our new vet eliminated several that weren't mandatory. It is so very scary to have this happen. So glad your vet had evening hours. I agree that we must do whatever we need to do to keep our babies safe.
ReplyDeleteWags,
Noreen and Hunter
Poor sweet Misty! You were so good and then this! We're glad it got sorted out quickly and you are all better. Over here, it's Genji who reacts badly to vaccines, so he gets a dose of metacam along with his vaccine and he is fine.
ReplyDeleteI want to tell you that I also love going to the vet! I got my shots last week. There was a new one for leptosipirosis so #1 will have to take me in for a booster at the end of the month
Woofs,
Tommy
My dog Libby had reactions to vaccines. The first time was similar to the one you had. They got worse each time. The vet started giving her a shot of antihistamine before the shots and oral antihistamines afterwards. He also gave me a syringe of epinephrine to keep at home just in case she got worse before we could get to the clinic. Our Dr B says the lepto vaccine is the likely culprit. It often causes reactions.
ReplyDeleteOMC! How scary! We're glad you got back to the vet so quickly, Misty! Glad you're okay now too! Sending purrs to you sweet girl.
ReplyDeleteThat was scary. Glad Misty is OK and that she has responsible great vets.
ReplyDeleteI see you look better!! More POTP for you!

Oh, NO!!!!! Oh, we're SO sorry this happened! I had it happen to me, too -- Mom had always heard the warnings, but had never seen it either. Now, Mom pre-doses me with Benadryl, and we split my vaccinations up -- just to be on the safe side. Mom doesn't want to go through that EVER again!
ReplyDeleteYours sincerely,
Margaret Thatcher
