Misty on Tuesday

So yesterday was that day when I had to go to the V.E.T. for my annual health checkup.  I see that many of my readers don't like to go to the V.E.T., but I am different. I love riding in the car, and I love ALL the people at my veterinary clinic.  I had a great checkup.  Everything was good.  My weight has been stable at 43.4 lbs. for several months now.  My ears, eyes, teeth, heart are all superb.  The best part is that my vet, Dr. B., told me I was the sweetest Sibe he has ever met (and he himself once had a couple of Sibes).  He said if anyone ever asked him where they could find a good husky, he would be telling them all about me and my wonderful breeder where I spent my first days.  I guess he likes me:)  Mom made me even happier when she told Dr. B. that this is the real Misty.  I am sweet and loving all the time with everyone, human and furry alike.

So where did things go so wrong that I ended up looking like this???

Do you see how swollen my eyes and my snooter look?  I was perfectly fine all day and even went for a long walk in the afternoon.  Mom left for a couple of hours to pick  up the grandkids at school and get them started on their homework while she waited for their parents to get home from work.

When Mom got home right before dinnertime, I was racing all over the kitchen, trying to rub the sides of my face on the floor, on the knobs of the cabinets, on the carpet, and along the sides of the wire crate.  She said to me, "What is wrong with you, Misty?"  I looked up at her and this is what she saw.

She immediately called the V.E.T. and told them she was pretty sure I was having a bad reaction to one of the vaccines I had gotten that morning.  Fortunately for us, our clinic has evening hours on Monday nights, or I would have been off to the E.R.  Mom and I got in the Highlander asap and headed to the clinic, which is only about 8 minutes away.

By the time we got there, my face was really starting to swell a lot.  You can see the swelling had started to spread all along the side of my lips.  My guy Dr. B. was in with another patient, but the lady Dr. B came out right away and took me to the back.  They gave me a shot of something that Mom can't remember the name of to counteract the reaction along with a dose of benadryl.

This is how I looked after the injection, still pretty bad.  I can barely open my eyes.  And it continued to get worse for a bit longer.  Mom and I had to wait at the clinic for about 90 minutes because they didn't want me to go home until they saw the swelling start to go down a lot.  They take very good care of all of us at this place.  While we were waiting, my guy Dr. B. came out and sat down to talk to Mom about what had happened.  Since I got injections that morning for rabies, lepto, distemper, and canine flu, there is no way to know which one was the problem OR if it was too much at one time.  Dr. B. said that my file has already been flagged as "vaccine reactive", and in the future I will only get one vaccine at a time and Mom will give me Benadryl before we get to the vet's.  That will be a lot safer for me and it may help them figure out which one is the culprit.  Dr. B. also said that this may never happen again, but we can't take any chances.  If Mom hadn't gotten me to the clinic when she did, this story might have had a very different ending.

I had to get some more Benadryl before bedtime last night and again this morning. But all should be good now.  My face is not swollen at all now, and my eyes are back to normal.

SEE!!!

Much, much better!!!

Thanks, both Dr. Bs., for taking such good care of our sister, sweet Misty - we don't want anything bad to happen to her.

But that Benadryl is still working on me.
So I guess it is time to snooze for a bit.

Woos - Misty

Note from Mom: I have heard of other dogs having problems with vaccines before but have never experienced it myself.  From now on, ALL the dogs will get any vaccinations spread out over a couple of visits - the extra car rides will be more than worth it if it keeps my babies safe.

  1. Wooo Misty we are so sorry to hear about the reaction you have had to the vaccinations. We sure are glad your mom got home to you in time and that the vets got you sorted real quick.
I had an emergency trip once due to swelling of the face and throat (I was struggling to breath) but mine wasn't because of vaccines it was some animal. We don't know which animal either a snake, caterpillar, centipede or scorpion. Whatever it was we were lucky to have our vet close by.
    Keep getting better beautiful furfriend.

Oh yukky poohhssss.... I can sympaw-thighs, Misty, for I's one of those peeps who just can't take jabs of any kind, or even most standard medicines... it is what drove me down the ancillary route and how ended up being a homeopathic doctor. But the shots have their place and it sounds like your darling vet-man is up to the task!!! Glad you got such GRRRReat attention. Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  11. Thank goodness you are ok now! We learned a few years ago to NEVER, EVER, EVER give more than one shot at a time. I doubled up on our cat once and he became EXTREMELY ill...now it is only one shot at a time...PERIOD! Oh and Dakota LOVES going to the Vet, he has no problem with it at all :)

  12. Oh Misty, we are so sorry that happened to you. But it sounds like the vet is going to get it under control. I have had some cats who had bad reactions to shots. We are so glad you are all right now. Have a good day.

  13. Oh Misty that's just awful you had that reaction to one of your shots.....now that they know this could happen, they won't let you have so many at once and no more swelling. I bet that was scary huh?! You were very brave though. Get lots of rest.

    Hugs, Teddy

  20. That was very scary! Shyla recently had a similar reaction to a bee sting... and got a steroid injection along with a Benadryl injection. I'm so glad that you were close enough to Misty in so fast. Time is of the essence with that kind of reaction, as you know.

As an aside, I have a friend whose dog initially had rather "minor" reactions to vaccines like Misty's but later had a huge reaction that eventually led to her death due to brain swelling. That friend is a writer who often writes about veterinary issues for magazines. So, she's researched it tons and tons - and would probably say that you might not want to vaccinate Misty again. She'd probably also say that getting titers would be a better idea so you know whether the previous vaccines are still covering her. I can pass along my friend's email address if you want.

Due to my friend's experience, we now minimize vaccines and never have more than one given in a day. It really is worth the extra car trips. I'm so glad that Misty is okay!

  23. So very thankful that you got Misty to the vet without anything worse happening. Hunter once had a reaction to all those same shots-although his was a racing heart during the night-we really thought we were going to loose him. From then on, I will not allow him to get any of the shots together. Our new vet eliminated several that weren't mandatory. It is so very scary to have this happen. So glad your vet had evening hours. I agree that we must do whatever we need to do to keep our babies safe.

  24. Poor sweet Misty! You were so good and then this! We're glad it got sorted out quickly and you are all better. Over here, it's Genji who reacts badly to vaccines, so he gets a dose of metacam along with his vaccine and he is fine.

I want to tell you that I also love going to the vet! I got my shots last week. There was a new one for leptosipirosis so #1 will have to take me in for a booster at the end of the month

    Woofs,
    Tommy

  25. My dog Libby had reactions to vaccines. The first time was similar to the one you had. They got worse each time. The vet started giving her a shot of antihistamine before the shots and oral antihistamines afterwards. He also gave me a syringe of epinephrine to keep at home just in case she got worse before we could get to the clinic. Our Dr B says the lepto vaccine is the likely culprit. It often causes reactions.

  29. Oh, NO!!!!! Oh, we're SO sorry this happened! I had it happen to me, too -- Mom had always heard the warnings, but had never seen it either. Now, Mom pre-doses me with Benadryl, and we split my vaccinations up -- just to be on the safe side. Mom doesn't want to go through that EVER again!
    Yours sincerely,
