Monday Mystery Mischief

Lightning here today with a real Whodunit Mystery for you.

I decided that I will be the spokesperson today because we ALL know that I am incapable of performing mischief on Monday or any day (stop that snickering).

So let me set the scene for you.  Late Friday afternoon Mom came home from the grandbipeds and thought it felt cold in the house.  She checked the thermostat for the first floor and saw that it was correctly registering the 68 degrees F at which it was set.  BUT there was a flashing red light on the screen and a message that said there was an important alert.  Following the instructions on the screen, Mom discovered that the outside temperature sensor attached to one of our heat pumps was malfunctioning and showing the outside temperature to be -40 degrees F, MINUS 40????  Within a few minutes the temperature showing on the screen dropped to 66, then a few minutes later, back to 68, and repeat.  She called the company that takes care of our furnaces and a/c units because she surely did not want to be without heat for the weekend with the frigid temps we have been having.

Long story short, the technician arrived after 6:00 p.m. and so it was dark outside.  We don't have any photos of the problem but suffice it to say that it involved some chewing.

We have two units outside, one for each level of the house.  See all those wires.  Well, some one of them is attached to a temperature sensor that has to be exposed so it correctly registers the outside temperature. That reading transmits to the system to let it know if our heat should be running on the heat pumps (temps higher than 35 degrees) or switching on the furnaces in the basement.  Some "critter" or "pest" had chewed through the wires on one of the sensors.  And so the system was terribly confused.  Luckily the technician was able to install a new sensor even though it was very dark out there.

The technician actually suggested that it might have been one of the dogs!!!!  Misty and Timber were not confessing to anything.  After all, there is NO first hand evidence.  What about all those pesky rabbits and squirrels that we try to chase out of our yard all the time???

So what do YOU think?  Squirrel?  Rabbit?  Is Timber guilty?  Misty? Or maybe a Duo Chewing Contest?  I am going to remain neutral - there is nothing to be gained by me if I make an accusation.  I am just happy that Mom KNOWS it wasn't ME!!!

If you look behind me in the photos, you can see Mom's crazy remedy so this doesn't happen again - she wired two of those no-sibe fences together for some height and put them on both sides of the units to keep us out - what about those squirrels and rabbits?  They can slip through in a nanosecond!!!  And one other glitch for her - the ground is too hard for her to push the fences through the frozen soil:)  She needs a BIG warmup:)

The good news is that it was nice and warm inside for the peeps.  Now what WE want is a big snowstorm like our friend Abby in Chicago got.

Woos - Lightning (Misty and Timber too)

  1. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh My Woos the tech had the audacity to suggest it might be a dog? WHAT did he fall on his head on cement.
Stand your ground down confess w/o a lawyer present
My Woos would never ever do that. I'm positive. Look at those innocent faces. The good/bad news is now that the Momster has put of the fence if it happens again, which we hope it doesn't because that would be bad, it will be clear that it was not a Woo Who Dunit, and that would be good news.

    Hugs madi your bfff

  5. Oh we know it wasn't a dog. Why would any dog want to chew on those silly wires. Love Mom's solution. That is something our Mom would do. Hope the little varmits stay out of ther. Glad you are warm again. Take care.

  7. Well, friends, let me tell you! I watch a lot of British detective/mystery shows, so I think I've got this totally figured out. There is one answer, and one alone. Squirrels. Seriously. Or bunnies. Yeah, that's it. Squirrels or bunnies. CERTAINLY not a Siberian of any sort. No way, no how.
Trust me; I'm an expert. Sort of.
    Yours sincerely,

  9. Hi Lightning and the other two Sibes, What an interesting story! I too would blame it on the squirrels or rabbits. I'm just thankful that no animal was injured chewing on the wires. It is so cold here today; It's been snowing lightly all day and the temp shows it is 19 degrees-but I just walked to the mailbox and I can tell you it is really cold. We have Lily over today and those two are smart-just want to stay inside. Copper was getting bred and they felt that she was the only dog they could handle-because Lily might try to attack the stud. You tell your mom to stay warm. I love the way she blocked off the units.

  11. I can honestly say that I have never messed with the AC box and the wires in the back yard. Nope, not me! I'm too busy trampling ghostwriter's flower beds to ditz around with boring old wires and stuff!

  12. I think your mom is smart to make it pup proof now!

  13. We know it wasn't any of you because why would you do such a thing? That means your mom's fence won't stop the culprit so we hope it doesn't happen again!

  14. It's the rabbits, they eat ANYTHING this time of year. We do put out alfalfa pellets for Mr. Bun so he doesn't eat our baby Hemlock trees, or otherwise we'd have no replacement trees for the ones that are 100 years old and going to the tree bridge.

  15. Our heat pump is behind a metal fence so no way we can chew on anything

  16. I bet that was the groundhog beast who chewed at something ... we had that too with the car, the fuel gage showed the mama 88 kilometers but nevertheless the car ran out of gas... the car-guy said it was a chewed wire, probably an evil critter who wanted to see the mama lost in france...

  17. I knew who the culprit was from your first sentence. It was a MOUSE! They are known for chewing on wires in the winter and they cost peeps lots of money and heartache for their destructiveness! I know it wasn't you guys!

  19. We would always blame the squirrels but since a pose of Blue Jays have taken over our yard, we think they could also be to blame. Do you have Blue Jays in your yard?

  20. We want to see those wires for forensic purposes. Then you can measure the bite marks and determine the size of the perp. We put our money on a rodent of some sort but certainly no dog would do such a thing.

  21. We think it was squirrels too. We've had squirrels chew on wires and one electrocuted himself while cutting off power to the whole neighborhood. Crazy critters!

  22. We are late reading this, but whoever it was, we are glad you have it fixed! We blame squirrels! A Squirrel around here once took out our internet and phone lines.
