Thunder
Well, there is no easy way to put it. And I am having a hard time expressing myself. The news is not good. Thunder has two large masses in his liver and abnormal tissues around the gall bladder and pancreas, and possibly kidneys (ultrasound wasn't definitive on kidneys, but suspected). Aspiration of the two liver masses and initial exam shows high likelihood of malignancy. The samples will be sent out to the lab for analysis, but both their oncologist and internal medicine doctor said they have no doubt it is cancer and the underlying cause of the IMHA. His blood levels have worsened so the steroids are not working. We can add another drug to try to help the blood but it won't change the cancer. They are giving him a couple of months at best. Chemo, surgery, etc. are not options on the table. Surgery could possibly be done to remove the tumors from the liver but would not be a viable option for the other areas.
We have seen little improvement in Thunder in almost two weeks now. He is not eating enough to sustain himself. He has lost his desire to eat because he just feels so ill. We are adding Pepcid to his steroid intake and discontinuing the doxycyclin. His energy levels are very low and he has lost more weight. We will be very closely monitoring his quality of life because we only want what is best for him.
As you can all imagine, this is not the news we wanted to hear and we are all stunned. Thunder is only seven years old and has never been anything but very healthy - at least it appeared so. Our hearts are broken because the prognosis is very bleak. We know you will forgive us if we can't visit you right now and find it hard to post. We are just too sad.
Kathie
Many thanks to Ann and Alasandra for the two beautiful graphics.

ReplyDeleteDebi and Norwood
My sorrow is so great...I love Sibes more than most people know. We had 3, we had one litter because we promised our breeder. We showed them in conformation and obediance. We had 6 wonderful healthy puppies. Our adult 3 all died from exactly what Thunder has. A cancerous tumor that attached to the liver/spleen and they bleed to death internally. Rose simply dropped at age 11 and was gone. We learned what had killed her, and so when Mischa, our puppygirl aged 14 1/2 came back from her morning walk, only 3 mos after Rose ran to the Bridge, I saw Mischa suddenly lower her head and I knew; we rushed her to the vet and they told us she was beyond our help and we helped her to the BRidge. THen 4 mos later, Crusty, our boy at age 12, showed the same signs, we were able to have him with us with good life quality for two weeks through blood tranfusions, but then we had to send him to join the girls so they could be a pack once more. All 3, gone in 9 mos. From the same thing. I am so very sorry. This type of tumor is apparently common in larger breed dogs; doesn't make it any easier. My 3, Rose, Mischa and Crusty will be ready to greet him when his turn comes to dash North OTRB. warm hugs, Mom Linda
ReplyDeletewe is sending you lots of purrs big woofie ... purrs that you feel better, purrs that you will eat and more purrs for your family that they with the guidance of your vets will do what is necessary for you - purrs purrs purrs

ReplyDeleteMy heart is absolutely breaking for you! I know just what you are going through, as that is what happened with Holly. It was too late when we found all the cancer inside her. Cancer is a horrible, horrible thing, that sneaks up and takes our beautiful babies from us, often with no warning, and at much to young an age. I am sending lots of prayers to you and many hugs! I know all too well the pain you are going through, and I am here if you need to talk.
ReplyDeleteJan
I just saw your comment on our blog and I am so sorry he is having such bad days. I sure do feel for you. Sending tons of prayers to all of you and some mighty big hugs too.
ReplyDeleteOhhh...we're so sorry we're so late and we're so sorry to hear about Thunder!! We've been so busy and are really behind with visiting blog friends and only catching up a bit now...really upset to see this. I can just imagine how you must be feeling, Kathie - it is such a horrible situation to be in. I feel really inadequate as there is really nothing I can say or do to help - but just want you to know that you're in our thoughts and I know you'll do what is best for Thunder. He is such a brave boy.
ReplyDeleteThinking of you all from far away and Honey sends Thunder lots of slobbers,
Hsin-Yi
Although I dont comment on your blog regularly I am just heart broken for you to hear this. I know you must be so sad and scared. It is worse because Thunder is young, but remember he has had an amazing life with you. When I have had to make difficult decisions about my own dogs I try to remember they live only in the moment, they dont think about hte past or future and they dont fear the end. This doesnt make it easier but its what I try to think of
