All my readers keep telling me that I will learn so much from my BIG brother Lightning. So I am trying to listen very carefully and learn all that I can.
But Lightning said we wouldn't be having class today because he has a "hot spot". I don't know what that means, but Mom said I have to take good care of Lightning and not bother him too much.
I don't think I like that big black thing he has on his head so I thought I would just try to keep him company by lying quietly next to him. Is that what I should be doing?
Since I didn't want to be too close to his head, I thought I would try hugging his tail. Maybe he would like that.
Oops, that sunpuddle found me and I just fell sound asleep.
So here's the story from Mom:
Tuesday night I discovered a huge sore on the side of Lightning's neck. We paid a visit to the vet yesterday where it was determined that he has a bad hot spot. Most likely it began a few weeks ago when he was groomed at the kennel before coming home from being boarded. His undercoat may not have been dried thoroughly enough. Add to that the stress of his last week with Ciara, the loss of Ciara, and the entrance of a puppy - the perfect recipe for a hot spot to fester. He is on a round of antibiotics to prevent infection. But the hot spot is incredibly itchy, and Lightning has a mighty powerful back paw. So out came the dreaded cone. Poor guy was miserable with both the cone and the itchies. Benadryl did nothing for him. So today the vet gave him some Apoquel tablets to calm the itchiness. If it doesn't work, he will get a prednisone shot. He had his first dose late morning, and I am already seeing him feeling more comfortable. He is getting some freedom from the cone while I can supervise him, but it will go back on overnight. Poor boy!!!
Yes, Mom, I am much happier right now.
Thanks for the good meds.
OK, Lightning, what's this all about? I am not so sure about this orange thing around my neck. But at least it isn't as bad as that black cone.
Just look at Mom, Misty - she has treats!!!
It will all be over soon.
I have SO much to learn:)

ReplyDeleteLightning, Buddy, sorry about the itchies. That sounds terrible! I thought I would mention that #1 has started to use coconut oil on any itchies we have and it seems to be good at soothing them. I hope it heals quickly, so you can go back to tutoring Misty full-time.

It does sound like the stress of all that has occurred over the last month played a part in the hot spot. I get stressed when too much is happening, just don't get hot spots-though I once got shingles from stress.
ReplyDeleteHave a great evening and Friday.

Noreen and Hunter
That's the good thing about hot spots, once you get the meds on board, it's all down hill - I hope that healing continues!!

ReplyDeleteOh Lightning, Split knows just how you feel, she has to wear a cone too. Hope that hot spot goes away soon for you. Misty, that last picture of you is too cute. And the two of you with your bandannas on is just the best. Misty you are learning the ropes.
ReplyDeleteMisty, you're a grreat little sister. That was EXACTLY what Lightning needed! We hope he feels better really soon.
ReplyDeleteOh, my WORD! What sweet photos! Please tell Lightning we're sorry to hear about the hot spot and to see the cone. Maggie went through that recently and it was NO FUN. We hope yours responds as quickly to antibiotics and topical treatment as hers did!
ReplyDeleteCammie!
Lightning I'm so sorry about the hot spot. I can only imagine how bad it must itch and how uncomfy it is. Everyone who has ever had the itches or the sickies know what a good dose of meds can do to make one feel better. Hang in there good buddy.
ReplyDeleteMOLMOL Misty you are napping on the business end of Lightning but under the circumstances I don't blame you that cone is scary.
We love your bandannas they look very nice with your furs....and I'm sure Lightning told you I, Madi, get very excited when I see furiends in neckwear
Hugs Madi yourbfff
LOL Woo Mom
ReplyDeleteMom said it will always be a pocketbook to her... she has a sentimental spot for the word too. My human sis started talking very early. One of her first words was 'pocbook'! She loved pocketbooks from a very early age and to this day she still has a collection of them
Hugs Madi
Sending you tons and tons of POTP big guy...........you both look so wonderful in your Halloween scarves and if you get rid of that spot you'll FEEL wonderful too!
