I was right!!!
The storms came by this morning and early afternoon and brought thunder boomers and lightning flashes.
Once the storm is here, I don't care at all, it is the approaching front that makes me feel funny.
Meanwhile . . . .
A different side of the Pest.
Do you see the worry on her face?
And those ears?
Those ears tell us so much.
Please tell me it is over, Mom, please. I don't like THAT kind of "thunder".
Don't worry, Phantom, I have your back. Now could you please make like you are really hungry so we could get an early dinner tonight?
Woos ~ Phantom, Thunder, and Ciara
Note from the Momster: Amazing to see the different reactions to our storms. Phantom is bothered by storms days before they arrive and then is fine once they are here. Ciara is just the opposite. She gets very panicky at the onset of even the smallest of storms - this could get very interesting when the big storms arrive in the next few months. We are trying KB's suggestion of giving her tasty treats when the booms and flashes happen. And then there is Thunder who is as calm as could be during the storms - all he wants is his dinner.
We think it's amazing that Phantom can detect storms so far in advance. Kendra used to be able to tell when they were about a half hour away, then she acts like Ciara during the storm. Storms don't bother Daisy and Bella.
ReplyDeleteXXXOOO Daisy, Kendra & Bella
Hi, I love your blog and seeing what the 3 Sibes get up to! I wonder if Phantom suffers from barometric pressure-induced migraines? It could be making him feel nauseous and off his food. If humans can get them, why not dogs? Love, Claire
ReplyDeleteI don't like storms either. I have to go hide in my safe place so they can't get me. Mum just gets a migraine when the storms are coming so she sympathises with Phantom.
ReplyDeleteStumpy was fine with thunder and lightning til we ran inot a kansas storm. She can totally relate to Phantom's apprehension and ciara's fear.
ReplyDeleteThunder, appropriately named, just looks like Joe Cool! Woos!!
ReplyDeleteAt least you knows when da storms are coming. At our house, Rusty is the weather forecaster. And it doesn't have to be storms. He starts shaking and whining if it's only light rain or sometimes just dark clouds.
ReplyDeleteI got your back, too, Phantom! It is funny because I am afraid of LOTS of things, but storms have never bothered me. My mom sometimes wonders if I am hard of hearing because I sleep right through thunder and lightening. Of course, I hear a bag of chips opening from anywhere in the house so I guess it is more selective hearing.
ReplyDeleteYour pal, Pip
White Dog can sense them building getting pretty nervous and Puff doesn't like the actual storm. Quinn hates thunder but will stand out in the rain. Nuka enjoys the advantages of being deaf but still naps deep in the safety of the house. Amazing how different each is, eh?
ReplyDeleteNow, Phantom, please go eat your dinner!
One thing that we have noticed in a multi-dog house, is that the dogs
ReplyDeletefeed off of each other's reactions.
Wyatt looks to Stanzie to see if she is afraid...if you are brave then maybe it's okay...if you are afraid, then I'm scared too!!
Wyatt's Mom
I must be the odd dog - storms don't bother me at all but I had a buddy - Franklin the Corgi who would shake and tremble so badly his mom had to give him a sedative to calm him down. Those are terrific photos of you all
ReplyDeletew00fs, storms dont bother any of ours...lol, but they scare me, esp if its bigggg thunder..
ReplyDeleteb safe,
rocky
poor Ciara doesnt look like she having fun at all, and Phantom looks so sad on thurs, poor guy, mayb it like one of the people above said mayb its a doggy form of a migraine that he gets, Scamp use to brack at the thunder but by the time we moved to where we're living now his hearing wasnt the best and the last thunder storm we had he didnt even notice it,
ReplyDeleteJenny :)
Animals are amazing. My Gizzy hates the lightning and thunder, even though his hearing is not as good anymore and he can't hear all of the thunders, except when it crashes down right above us when the windows rattle ;-) ... but the lightnings are very scary to him and that's the only time he wants to sit on my lap!
ReplyDeleteWe've heard of humans feeling storms in their bones but dogs must feel something too. Poor little Ciara though, she's not going to enjoy spring time in Kansas just like our mommy doesn't. We hope the treats help!
ReplyDeletePeeS: Of course the No-No bracelet was named after you, beautiful Ciara! We thought it was a very pretty name of a very pretty girl for a very pretty bracelet too!
Phantom and Zack get that same look! We have T-storms in our forecast tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteIt just breaks my heart to see him like that.
Fenris is very calm during storms, even tropical storms. He likes sitting on the picnic table observing them.
ReplyDeleteWe wonder if the drop in pressure bothers Phantom. It bothers Mommy's inner ear and makes her have vertigo.
The librarian who has Irish Wolfhounds told Mommy about Thunder Shirts
http://www.thundershirt.com/
Morgan is the only one left who is afraid of storms, though Noah barks at the thunder. The others pay no attention. Monty was my worst. She was a basket case during storms.
ReplyDeleteYou have super powers Phantom!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Ciara is scared!
I hope you all got lots of treats!
And and early dinner too!
Take care
Kisses and hugs
Lorenza
Oh my! I LOVE that second to last picture, it is PERFECT!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt rained here today too... butt {WHEW} no storms... They scare the furs off ME!!
ReplyDeleteYour pictures show your reactions VERY well.
It's great that Phantom can feel a storm coming while Thunder is there to keep everypaw calm. We do hope that treats will help Ciara's lightning fears. Do stay warm and cozy there.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Piappies Fudgie, Princess, Frappie, Mocha, Sugar, Wai-Pai, Wai-Max & Forgie
Yep, nothing boring about having more than one furry around.
ReplyDeleteI have have never had a dog that was scared of thunderstorms, kids yes, but not dogs. I admit that I sometimes get a bit nervous!
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone is safe and sound:)
i've got the perfectest solution -- no more storms evarrr!! hmmmmm, my mama is sayin' that won't work cuz the grasses 'n trees 'n stuff need the rain waters. okie dokie, then, how about no more storms with lightning 'n thunder! there!
ReplyDelete*woof*
the booker man
pee s -- did phantom eat his supper? i sure hope so.
Amazing that a few weeks ago we were talking about snow, and now thunder and lightning. The weather is so weird.
ReplyDeleteMarge is a bit of a storm-phobe herself. I second the suggestion of giving treats - Marge and I play lots of games with cookies when it starts to thunder and it's helped her fears dramatically. Fireworks, not so much...
Your photos are always so gorgeous and make me smile! We were owned by a Sibe once, and they are my hubby's favorite breed. I've been trying to talk him into adding another to our pack.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing how all animals are different? Our donkeys do not even flinch at the sound of the boomers. I wonder what the birdies do.
ReplyDeletePhantom has ESP
love
tweedles
Howdy!
ReplyDeleteOOO I am so happy we don't get proper storms, or rarely even get thunder!
We do get rain...
But the weather has been ok lately. Comfy bed you've got there!
Koda
We are also afraid for a storm
ReplyDelete(Mommy also !!!!)
We all want SPRING
but spring where are you ??
Have a nice week-end
Hugs
Kareltje =^.^= ♥ Betsie >^.^<
Anya :)
We got some serious thundery afternoon on Friday too!
ReplyDeleteI spent the time lounging under the dad-ster's study table. (not that i'm terrified of the thunder sound or anything...:)
What a beautiful smile from Ciara!
A balanced pack is what you guys are!
Cheers,
Maxx
You guys need a brave, strong mancat to come cuddle you?
ReplyDeleteYour different reactions are very interesting. I am not at all bothered by storms, and neither are any of the Chans. #1 says we're lucky,
ReplyDeleteWoofs,
Tommy
fascinating! i didn't know why P was hiding and not eating... that makes a lot of sense.
ReplyDeletei used to get (still do) get ear aches with pressure changes... usually in august/sept i get them... w/o fail i get them that time of year. no doc has ever really found a problem tho... strange...
at least you know why P was acting sad... glad it's just the weather!
Phantom has amazing sixth sense. My spotted sister can sense when a storm is about to come too & she gets SO stressed up just like Ciara when it finally arrives. She would pace around the house, follow the hoomies around, pant, shiver & will refuse to eat UNTIL the storm is absolutely over. For the rest of us, we're like Thunder. We couldn't care less about the storms. We just WANT OUR FOOD!
ReplyDeleteWe are very fortunate that none of The Herd is bothered by storms. Qannik gets a little nervous, but takes his cue from the others and just settles down for them.
ReplyDeleteMom says Kyrye was like Phantom - she'd get bothered pre-storm - and Banshey would alert them to how bothered Kyrye was -
ReplyDeleteMerdie used to be but now that her hearing is pretty non-existent, she isn't as much -
I've taken to being a bit anxious - and do my best to khling to Mom - of khourse, she doesn't mind at all - and she tells me it's okay -
I'll admit I give Mom some of those same faces that Ciara has shared -
I'm sure Thunder Dunder does his best fur all!
Hugz&Khysses,
Khyra
It is so strange how we all react so differently. To detect when on the way as well. I have no problem at all with storms and sit in my window and watch them. I love the photo's today.. Hugs GJ xx
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't have too many storms...the ears say it all! Our late Shepherd/Akita was troubled by storms and we gave her some Rescue Remedy, but she really didn't like storms or fireworks no matter what we did. She tore a door off our house during one! Our neighbor's Lab hides in her bathtub when storms hit. Thank goodness these "kids" (so far, paws crossed for always) don't mind it, although like Phantom, a few seem to get antsy prior to the storm too. Bring back the snow!
ReplyDeleteHope you beautiful babies got some early dinner!
Gorgeous pics of the many faces of the OP Pack. Maybe Thunder hears the bipeds talking about "thunder" and thinks everyone's talking about HIM, so why worry?
ReplyDeleteStar hated storms, she would get very panicky during storms & find a place to hide. Jack seems impervious, unless they are loud - then he joins mom. Moo is never more than 15 feet away from mom anyway, so who knows?
jack & moo
Phantom, we figured that you were used to Thunder booms. Don't you hear them every time Thunder runs around?
ReplyDeleteSteve
We cats don't mind the storms but both of our woofies get really scared.
ReplyDeleteThe Florida Furkids and Angel Sniffie
Auntie Penny gets scared of storms. I doesn't care about them one way or another.
ReplyDeleteYou could try doing Ttouch with Ciara and get one of those pressure wraps?
~lickies, Ludo
Storms don't seem to bother us.....right now our main "bother" is our new sister.....she's much too energetic for us old "duffers"!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful, wonderful, wonderful photos.
xxxxxxxxx
i'm sorry couldn't help but notice there's a kitty in your photo! furry sneaky kitty.. especially when woo knows a storms coming.
ReplyDeleteluv the photos of ciara & phantom!
tula
Hey guys! We are back! And wow! Ciara! You have grown so much since we last saw your post!!!! What a beautiful wooosky! xxx
ReplyDeleteWhat furry cute photos!
ReplyDeleteWe got some rain today... but no storm!
Rudy
We are glad it was only the storms and hope it is over now. So far, nobody here is afraid of them. Lots of love, Holly and mom
ReplyDeleteI don't like storms either! I become vecroMaggie! Lucky Mitch isn't bothered by them.
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots
Maggie and Mitch
I have been very scared of storms so my Mom calls me her Velcro dog when thunder and lightning come. Then she bought me a Storm Coat, and it helped the first few times but after that not so much. I don't mind if she puts it on me though. She says she might try KB's method with the treats . . .and I am ALL for that!
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Stella
Yep, you can tell so much by that face and those ears. I'm with Phantom - - days before storms come I feel so much pressure on my head...I've told JP that I'm a human barometer. Now, I've got a buddy in Phantom.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it's been very wintry here, I've been seeing thunderheads far away on the eastern horizon and wondered if you were getting storms.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what Phantom senses in the lead-up to storms? It's intriguing but so sad that he worries for so long.
I hope that the "trick" works for Ciara. I can see the worry in her creased face and ears. It won't work immediately but maybe if you keep at it...
Have you heard of the Thunder vest? I wonder if that would help them out?
ReplyDeleteOh boy Phantom should take over for our weathermen b/c they can never get it right... it could be called weather for woos.
ReplyDeletenorwood
Oh, it's so sad when doggies are scared of storms. I'm like Thunder actually - I couldn't care less. My humans always just ignored storms and acted like it was no big deal, so I took my cue from that! :-) But I know some doggies can't help it and really get upset by storms. I have heard of that Thunder Vest that others are talking about too - Darwin the Blue Dane uses it - and they seem to be very impressed with it! Maybe Ciara could try that if it gets really bad?
ReplyDeleteSlobbers,
Honey the Great Dane
Did you finally find the pests weakness?

I'm glad it was just storms that were bothering Phantom - It's hard when your pups are troubled! Luckily my 2 are not terribly bothered by storms. Hopefully that won't ever change. KB's suggestion is a good one, though - it will take their minds off the bad noises and let them associate storms with treats.
ReplyDeleteCiara's collar looks beautiful on her! My mother's cats freak out when a storm is coming in. Before the big tsunami a few years ago, the people said the animals were heading for higher ground. Animals just know so much more than us pitiful humans!
ReplyDeleteMamma Heartbeat
How interesting that they all react differently. Two of my cats scurry under the bed during thunderstorms and fireworks. My other cat used to hide as well, but has surprised me lately by paying the storms and fireworks no notice.
ReplyDeleteSamuel is the only one here who gets totally freaked out by storms. He gets that way right before them and during the thunder. If it's just rain, then he's out wondering around in it like an idiot.
ReplyDeleteHe's weird.
Holly
