Today we are joining in on Brian's Thankful Thursday Blog Hop with a more or less positive update on Lightning for which we are thankful.
Our gentle giant has had us a little worried lately as he hasn't been quite "himself" for a few weeks. He has been doing a lot of this quiet time, or at least a lot more than usual. His coat has been very dry. Sometimes he lies in positions that makes Mom think he just doesn't feel good Mom says she "knows" her pups well and that something just seems off.
So after a conversation with our vet, Dr. C. suggested we run a full blood panel on him to check things out. He had one done last fall as part of his annual exam, so we would have a good source of comparison.
Overall the results came back looking pretty good. One item, the platelet count, is raising a few concerns as it is low. The report indicates the presence of large platelets and some clumping. There are so many possibilities that could explain this, some not so good, and some that could just be related to a bad blood draw. The vet is suggesting that we wait a few weeks, monitor his behavior, and then redraw the blood for another check. This way they would be able to see what the platelet count is doing. They will probably use a bigger needle for the draw and try to get Lightning as relaxed as possible. He was pretty scared yesterday and had to be held still. He doesn't deal well with stress as he has a lot of anxiety. His behavior and the use of a smaller needle could have had an impact on the sample.
Meanwhile, Misty is going to keep close tabs on her best buddy.
Mom wants to see this smiling Lightning around for a very long time. He may be her silly querky boy, but he is a very kind and loving dog.
Thanks for all the POTP for our boy.

Mom Kim here - Whoops - Lady Shasta sent that before I had a chance to intervene. Anyway, so sorry to hear that Lightning is not so well - sending prayers and healing vibes that all will work out.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I want to thank you for reminding me I wanted to do the same blood test for Lady Shasta - it is probably just her getting older and being an only right now but she lays around a lot and sleeps. She is willing to go on walkies with me but not play much when I try to interact with her unless it is napping or sleeping. I do plan on getting a companion for her but that is a few months off yet due to family things. I am praying for Lightning.

ReplyDeleteTry to relax, Lightning. Our vet says excitement or nerve can throw off the lab reports. We're hoping that you're already feeling better. Maybe that puppy sister of yours is wearing you out. Go off by yourself and grab a nap now and then.
ReplyDeleteAwww, we are sorry that Lightning hasn't been feeling his best, our humans do worry about us when we act a little different. Hopefully it nothing too serious and you are back to having fun chasing squirrels and your sister!
