Well, it didn't take long for us to go from Marvelous on Monday to Miserable on Monday night and now Terrible on Tuesday.
Last night I was outside enjoying the night air with Misty and Timber. I am not telling Mom what happened, but when it was time to come inside, I was limping pretty badly.
I hurt my right back leg. You might be able to tell that I am not putting any weight on it in this photo. I am hobbling around on three legs, and it is not very easy at all.
Mom was hoping that a night of rest would make things better, but that was not the case. So I was off to the V.E.T. early this morning. Mom called it before we even got there, and she was right, unfortunately. I tore my CCL. Pretty badly too:( So for a lot of green papers, I am going to have surgery on Friday with a specialist my veterinary clinic brings in every other week for surgery. Luckily this is his week to be here. I would much rather Mom be spending all that money on treats for all of us, but the surgery is absolutely 100% necessary.
From the Momster: Lightning, who is 7 1/2, likes to keep up with the two younger pups, Misty and Timber. Every now and then, he gets the zoomies urge and races around the yard with them. I am pretty sure this is what happened last night. He must have made a turn too sharply and tore his cranial cruciate ligament. If all goes well with our consult Thursday night and with his blood work, he will have TTA surgery on Friday and come home Saturday. Given that he is still relatively young and in very good health, our vet believes the TTA surgery will work better for Lightning that the other option of TPLO surgery. He should be weight-bearing in under two weeks and good to go after 3-6 weeks. The discouraging part is that there is a 60% chance he will tear the left knee within a year, and maybe even sooner, and an 80% chance he will tear it at some point in his lifetime. The hard part is keeping him quiet for up to 6 weeks. We could all use a bit of POTP. If anyone has any suggestions on recovery, please let us know. I already have a "help me up" harness on order and it should be here by Thursday.
Woos - Lightning and Mom
On no. Not good. I hope the surgery goes well and you heal quickly.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I can think of is not going out with the pups anymore and that way you won't be doing the zoomies. Lightening won't like it, but it will keep the zoomies down.
Sending you woof woof prayers for a good surgery and a quick recovery. Big hug to you wonderful mom. ♥
Oh No!! Hang in there Lightning! We are sending lots of POTP for a successful surgery on Friday and a very fast recovery!

That was a HUGE fall from Marvelous! You poor baby. (SHE can't believe you are 7 1/2 already.) You have our POTP. And we're sorry we haven't any ideas to help you. What a time to happen, just when it's getting cooler and pawfect zoomies weather! BUMMER.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness......I am going to be sending a huge pile of POTP and prayers that dear Lightning will COOPERATE and take it easy until he's totally healed up nice and tight again. It makes me sad to think he's hurting right now but we'll hope the surgery goes beautifully and that he will settle for snoopervising the youngsters while he recovers!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Teddy and Mom too
Oh so sorry. Hoping there is a speedy recovery but don't push it. My Keltic is toe touching a bit on one of his rea legs. But when I took him into the vet they didn't find anything They said there was no tension, stiffness and he was weight bearing so they though he maybe just sprained it. He's on Metacam and we have to keep a close eye on it.
ReplyDeleteOh noes! We're sorry to hear you're hurt, Lightning! We're sending purrs and woofs for the surgery to make you all better. Mommy sends snooter kisses too.
ReplyDeleteOh No! I will be praying your surgery goes well. XO

So sorry! We went thru that with Morgan. She didn't require surgery but had a very long recovery that included therapy after a few weeks. I'm glad I don't have to break the news about the other side happening. It took a little over a year before Morgan's second one. Again no surgery. We are sending tons of POTP.
ReplyDeleteOh no. Poor Lightning. So sorry this has happened to you. Poor Mom being so worried about you. We send lots of prayers and good thoughts that the surgery goes well and that you get all better quickly. We all have our paws crossed for you.
ReplyDeleteOh no, no, no. I'm so sorry, sweet Lightning. That must hurt very badly. I am sending tons and tons of POTP.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that we did for R during his elbow recovery was giving him his meals frozen inside a HUGE kong - it made the meal last long enough to be "entertainment". We feed him soft homemade food but canned food would work for this.
We also had R on doggy downers... Maybe Lightning won't need that?
Oh my, I'm so sorry.
Oh no...this is just awful to here. We have all 32 paws in our house crossed for a successful surgery and a quick recovery. And we also hope you're in the 20% category and not ever have this problem again. Sending love and hugs... ♥♥♥♥♥
ReplyDeleteOhhh Nooo!!!!! Lightening we are sending lots and lots of POTP and healing purrs to you. Buddy we are so very sorry your got hurt. We know it's going to be hard to stay off your feet but mind your Mom and listen to the Dr.

ReplyDeleteOh NO!!! What terrible news indeed! Those ligament tears are a thing all of us with sporty, active dogs dread. We are so, so sorry it as happened to Lightning. We will be crossing every paw, hoof and finger that his surgery goes smoothly, and he will be able to stand the rest and recovery period.
ReplyDeleteSupportive Woofs,
Tommy (and everyone at The Poupouunette)

Ohhhh Lightning, that doesn't sound fun at ALL! We're glad you can get the surgery you need quickly, though.
ReplyDeleteMomma said that when she had to keep Cinderella calm after heartworm treatment, she kept a dog bed by her chair and kept Ella leashed to her. That way Ella spent most of her time in the dog bed and preoccupied with the chewy there. Momma called Casey off any time he started to play with her, and he seemed to get it after a few days and left her more alone.
Oh dear Lightning. We have our paws crossed tight that all goes well with your surgery and post op care. Please be sure to do as your vet and mom tell you so you can make a full recovery.
ReplyDeleteLighting we cross all paws and fingers and we hope your mama has good news to share after your appointment... hugs and positive thoughts and lots of potp to you....

Belatedly - Ouch! Our sympathies! Our (then) 12 year old BC had a CCL tear after an abrupt zig-zag. She had TPLO surgery, unlike Lightning. We were extremely good about following all the surgeon and sports vet instructions, and she healed fine (though it seemed like forever - and a 7 year old has more pent up energy than a 12 year old. Hang in there!).
ReplyDeleteThe good news is that our surgeon told us that abrupt tears like that are often NOT followed by a tear on the other side. Second tears happen more often in overweight couch potato dogs who have cumulative wear and tear on both CCLs. No guarantee, but there's a little hope to hang onto.
We echo KB's advice of frozen Kongs. There are a lot of mental exercise games out there that can use up a surprising amount of time and energy. It gets better once the cone is gone. (We were able to use an apron-style "cone" rather than the hard plastic - not sure if that would work for Lightning).
We're rooting for you!
Chris from Boise
Oh boy Lightning I am so sorry you have been through this and we were not there for you. We see from the most recent dates that all is going well. We have been thinking of you all. We've been struggling since our Kyra went to the rainbow bridge back in July and have not been on blogs or our own for a long time. Anyway furpal, please keep up the good work in getting better, we are starting to catch up on blogs, but as you can imagine we have a lot to get through.
ReplyDeleteGentle wooos to you.
