Woozy Wednesday
No, I am not woozy despite that benadryl I had yesterday. I am happy to report that my vet visit went well. Dr. B. gave me only two of my vaccines, my rabies and my distemper shots. In two weeks I can go back and get my lepto and bivalent canine flu vaccines. This way IF I have a reaction, we can narrow down the culprit. NO reaction at all this time. Dr. B. said Mom could give me some more benadryl last night, but she thought all was looking good, so no more sleepy meds for me.
Now Lightning is a totally different story. Mom showed Dr. B. a photo of his incision which had gotten a lot worse overnight Tuesday night. He thought he saw a hole and told Mom to bring me right over. So she brought Misty home and took Lightning back. We have been to the vet's place so much lately that her phone shows "7 minutes to *** Veterinary Clinic" whenever she gets in the car now:)
So the center part of Lightning's incision had pulled apart quite a bit. Dr. B. wanted to try putting in a few big stitches to close the gap some but not totally. He wanted it to be able to drain some. He didn't see any sign of infection but thought it would be wise to do a culture just to be sure. Lightning had a 14 day Covenia injection the day of his surgery which is probably still working. But just to err on the safe side, Dr. B. put Lightning on a four day treatment with Baytril to tide him over until the culture comes back and/or the surgeon sees him tomorrow.
Dr. B. felt pretty confident that he could do the stitches with just some local lidocaine rather than sedating Lightning. If Lightning wouldn't lie still, he could still do the anesthesia. Of course, Lightning was very good and let Dr. B. take care of him with just the lidocaine. Now it is looking more and more likely that Lightning will not be getting his stitches out tomorrow:)
The "woozy" part of the visit is shown below.
Misty is keeping her very sleepy brother company. After much discussion, we opted to put Lightning on some sedation medicine for a few days to keep him off his feet as much as possible. Mom asked if he could stay at the clinic, but Dr. B. was concerned about him having an open wound and being in a hospital setting where he could be exposed to too much. So he is home again and dreaming of his freedom as the meds work on him.
This morning the incision is looking a lot better, but we will keep him on the sedative for a few more days. Yesterday he was really out of it, but today he is more alert but still looking to lie down almost all the time. That is a good thing. Mom is trying to keep the sedation dose at a minimum. Mom wishes this had been an option from the very beginning so we could have avoided all the stress of the past week.
Lightning feels quite fortunate to have an extra set of nursemaid hands today - our dancerina girl Ms. C. had the day off from school and decided to pay us a visit. She has been stroking his furs for over a half hour now. When she stops, all he has to do is tilt his head back and look at her, and then she starts all over again:)
Meanwhile, Misty and Timber are enjoying some really beautiful fall weather here and hoping it won't be long (dream on) before Lightning can join them.
While they wait, they will work together to keep the OP kingdom free of all those tree rats.

Poor Lightening and poor mom. Such an ordeal, but you'll get though it. Mom will see to it.
ReplyDeleteHave a woof woof day. My bet to your worn out mom. ♥
Oh my Woofriends...thank you for the update
ReplyDeleteMisty I'm so relieved that you had no ill effects from the first two vaccines.
Darling Lightning you are such a brave boy with just a local for the stitching. Thank goodness it is looking better today and I just know you are on the top of this surgical hill now and the rest of the way will be coasting
Hugs Cecilia
PS Timber hugs to you too
We feel so bad for you sweet Lightning but it will get better, really.
ReplyDeleteYou are the bestest sissy ever to keep Lightning company while he naps and heals, Misty. He sure isn't having an easy time of it.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that you found something to keep your boy drowsy and off his feet. I've had to do that on several occasions with the active water dogs. My dog Libby used to have severe reactions to her vaccinations. They determined it was the lepto vaccine. Dr B says that's the most common vaccine to cause problems.
ReplyDeleteLightening is so lucky to have a Miss C. We all know the body heals so much better after a lengthy stroking session. Sending love and hugs to all of you.
ReplyDeleteAll the best, Gail and Bertie.
Poor pups! Hopefully things will get better soon. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteOh, guess what? I saw a big fat bunny today! Too bad it was on the other side of the fence!
Dear Lightning, We are keeping our fingers and paws crossed that your incision heals quickly and you can be out of that cone. Hunter gets Benadryl for his skin allergies; I can't tell if it makes him sleepy or not. The rest of you keep those tree rats away. Hate them. I'm wondering if they are related to Roof Rats that we used to get in Ca.? Enjoy the nice autumn days.
ReplyDeleteWags,
Noreen and Hunter
So glad your vaccinations went well, Misty! And hopefully the new meds will be just enough to tide Lightning over. I had to take some sleepy pills when I was recovering from my big-girl surgery. It was much better than trying to stay still when I had so much I wanted to do!
ReplyDeleteRosy had a reaction to the Lepto last year, and Mama says she will be taking benedryl before she goes to get her booster for sure!
ReplyDeleteWe are so glad your Mama found a way to keep you comfy Lightning, and hope your incision heals up quick!

Jakey & Arty

ReplyDeleteWe are glad that your incision looks better today Lightning. Hopefully the meds will keep you relaxed for a few days to get on the way to healing. You have a lovely nurse to keep you company

That's great about the sedation. It will help the time go faster while you're healing, and it will give your mom a much needed break. Fingers crossed for you both.
ReplyDeleteWe want healing to start coming fast!

We're glad to hear Misty had a good vet visit but are sad to hear Lightning isn't doing as well. Our paws are crossed that the sleepy meds will keep him off his feet so he will continue to heal.
ReplyDeleteWe're sorry we have been MIA so much lately. It sounds like you have been having quite the time of it, and we are crossing all paws at this end.

So sorry to read about Lightning - paws crossed that the oozing will stop. You may want to check some FB groups - Canine Cruciate Recover (TPLO, CM etc) or Dogs who had TPLO surgery for torn cruciate - lots of advice/comments. Also, does your vet recommend titering for vaccinations - sounds like Misty is getting too many at one time. Both of my goldens have been titered for years and haven't had vaccinations for over 5 years now!! It's a blood test - and it sure helps keep the "poison" out of their systems. Reach out via email if you have any other questions! Hugs to your pups too
ReplyDeletePoor Lightning! Glad there's no sign of infection, though. That's a really good thing!
ReplyDeleteWe think Ms. C. should take time off school until Lightning gets all better - clearly he likes having his own nurse!
I had my Lepto booster today, so I'm on Benadryl. I had that and a 2-mile walk before I went in. That didn't stop me from screaming like a banshee when they tried to take my temp. Mom said I am VERY Siberian. That's a good thing, right? I didn't even flinch for the shot. Gotta keep 'em guessing!
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Thatcher
So sorry Lightning has gone through such challenges since his surgery. Here's hoping the post-surgical visit provides some 'pawsitive' news and he can begin full recovery without worrying about opening up his wound.
ReplyDeleteGlad Lightning had a visit from Ms.C.I bet he enjoyed that. Sending lots of gentle hugs to Lightning and the Mom. This has been quite an ordeal for both of you. Just have to hope it all gets better soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you have the sedative for Lightning now... R had that for weeks and weeks after his CUE surgery. It sure does help. And, vaccines are so scary. I'm glad that Misty got through the first set without problem!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, your vet is getting lots of visits, we hope you all are doing better soon!
