Umm, I could use a little help here, please.
I really want to gnaw on this bone, but I can't get my paws there to hold it:(
Mom wants to give you an update on my visit with my surgeon last night.
Good news:
- X-ray of "bad" leg shows the bone is healing beautifully in the words of the surgeon.
- X-ray of "good"leg shows the knee is very healthy and there is no sign of any arthritis.
- Lightning is cleared to do stairs - but slowly.
So-so news:
- Still leash only walking
- No running.
- No roughhousing.
Disappointing news:
Cone must stay at least for another week:( Because of all the leaking from his incision, there is still a very heavy scab in the central area of the incision. As soon as the cone comes off, if Lightning isn't under 100% supervision, he immediately goes to lick the incision area. The doctor is worried he will "help" the scab along and reopen his incision. A culture of his draining fluids two weeks ago showed that he had an infection called pseudomonas. It is a bacteria that does not typically respond well to a lot of antibiotics. He was on a dose of Baytril that seems to have cleared up the infection. We don't want it to reoccur. He will be re-evaluated in a week when he will be spending a long weekend at the vet's while I take a short trip. If the scab is still not resolving itself, they may decide to put him back on an antibiotic to see if that helps. After four weeks of the cone and all the rest of what goes along with this surgery, I can see my way through another week. It is poor Lightning that I feel for. He has been so good through this whole ordeal. Four weeks already and one more to come as a conehead is a long time. I wish I could make him understand why. He does get time to be cone-free for meals and for some other times when I know I am totally focused on him. Here's hoping that one more week does the job.
Meanwhile we are all VERY grateful for the good news about a healing bone and a healthy legs, AND for these two young ones who do their best to keep Lightning happy.
Happy Friday to everyone!!!
Woos - Lightning, Misty, Timber, and Mom

ReplyDeleteHave a woof woof day and weekend. My best to your wonderful mom. ♥
I'm glad for the good news and if you have to wear that cone a little longer we hope it will help you to heal and there is no new antibiotics or further treatment needed... hugs and lots of potp for only good news when you see your vet again...
ReplyDeleteThat is such good news that the bone healed well. So sorry, Lightning, that the cone has to stay on a little longer. We are all crossing out paws for you Lightning and the Mom that it won't be much longer. You two have been such good troupers through this whole thing.
ReplyDeleteYay for the good news, but I'm sorry you have to wear the cone even longer! But it'll all be worth it to be healthy in the end!
ReplyDeleteOh Lightning...so sorry about the no-great news, hopefully the rest of your progress can off set it. Keep being a good boy and that troublesome cone will be history. Elsa says she'd be happy to help shred it when the time is right.😊

Well that's a load of good news other than the cone issue and that boy Lightning has been a CHAMP - one more week will just give that leg even MORE time to be RIGHT and maybe keep him from getting to that scab when the cone comes off. I know Timber and Misty will be very happy to have their big brother back without the cone but nobody will be happier than sweet Lightning. What a good boy and we also know how much YOU have been through dealing with everything that had and has to be done to help Lightning. BLESS ALL OF YOU.....a week will fly by.
ReplyDeleteHugs to all, Teddy and Mom Pam
