Mom would describe it as her 10 days from hell, but in the end the result was good. We got a new deck!!! For over a week there was no way for us to go out in the yard because there were no stairs for several days and there was too much debris around for us to be safe out there.
So we got lots and lots of walks day and night, one at a time, up and down the street, and at least one longer one around the neighborhood. Mom's health app on her iPhone was blowing up with messages to her about the BIG changes in her daily activity:). At least it was a beautiful week weather-wise, nice temps and no rain. The hardest part was that first outing of the morning when we all had to pee at the same time and urgently. Mom says we were very patient and helped her out a lot by waiting our turn.
As you can see, the new deck is basically the same footprint as the old one, but the materials are different. Aside from the underpinning supports, there is little wood now, no more wood rot and no more puppy chewing, not that there are any hopes of a puppy here anyway:(
But there was one problem that we had to work to overcome. The new stairs had to meet current code requirements so the steps are a little closer together in height and they are wider from front to back. The old steps were made of a solid board and the new ones have two boards with a space through the middle. One of us does not like change at all, and it took some work to get him to adjust. If you are guessing it was Lightning, you would be correct.
"Are you crazy??? Surely you don't expect me to go down those scary steps!!!"
"OK, I will try one, maybe two, but nope, not working for me, I am going back up. I can't trust those boards. With that crack down the middle, I am not sure how many steps there really are."
So it took a good week, lots of coaxing and help, and lots of treats, but the old boy has finally mastered the challenge. He has some very serious bad leg problems and struggles with the stairs anyway. But he is a trooper and figured it out.
We are all very happy that we still have our lookout landing that also doubles as a great posing for treats spot:)

ReplyDeleteMay you have many happy hours on that shiny new deck! I think the wider shallower steps might actully suit you better Lightning, once you get over the change! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
The new decking looks super smart, and well done all for surviving the installation phase, and especially well done to Lightning for figuring out those confusing new steps!
ReplyDeleteToodle-oo!
Nobby.
Your new deck looks very nice. We're proud of Lightning!
ReplyDeleteThe new deck looks wonderful and we are so proud of you that you conquered those new steps, Lightning!
ReplyDeleteWoo woos are NEVER quiet, not even Mixed Breed Woo Woos. So sorry for the added mess of life and no back yard. yowsa i am shaking just thinking about that. Tell Mom you need her to have a strip of carpet installed down those steps, like a red carpet for you to use... i am so happy to SEE you THREE and your beautiful faces... the deck is beautiful and lets home changes are done for a while... Beau doesn't care for changes either.
ReplyDeleteYour new deck sure does look nice but we understand that any change sure isn't easy.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful deck and I'm glad all worked out well with the steps. Treats can do wonders.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to the pups and a hug to mom. ♥
Your new deck looks great and so do all of you! Lightning you are a funny boy. The new steps should have been easier for you since they are wider than the old ones! BOL!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting, good walks and a new deck to sit on. You are living the dream.
ReplyDeletePoor Lightning. I don't like change either. :) XO
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the deck and stairs are done and that Lightning is getting used to them. Poor Mom! I hope things go more smoothly now. ❤️

Java Bean: "Ayyy, a week with no access to the yard?! I can hardly imagine! The gophers would be running rampant here!"
ReplyDeleteCharlee: "Some would say the gophers are already running rampant here ..."
Java Bean: "But now you have a nice new deck to sunbathe on, so that's nice! I am not sure what 'stairs' are though."
Lulu: "They are a way to get from a lower place to a higher place."
Chaplin: "We cats also have a way to do that. We call it 'jumping'."
That deck looks so nice! It will be great to hang out on! But steps can be so scary---Redford just mastered the scary open basement steps at our house!
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice deck, I'm glad you got through that awful building phase and the scary learning phase and can now enjoy the outdoors again.
ReplyDeleteLightening we are glad you conquered the steps. We are thankful there are no steps at our house. Fen has trouble with the steps at Grandpa's, but then again so does Grandpa.
