As we were reading blog posts yesterday, one in particular caught Mom's attention. Responsible Pet Ownership Blog had an article by Julia Williams entitled "Why Do Our Pets Stare at Us?" If you want to read the full article, please click HERE. Julia talks about "the stare" and how pets, both cats and dogs, use the stare to get their humans' attention. Naturally Mom was especially interested in the part about dogs. Here is a small snippet from the post:
Dogs watch our face to see what kind of mood we're in. They are capable
of reading our emotions and know how we are feeling. It's called left gaze bias.
Canines watch us waiting for instructions or some well earned praise.
When working with your dog during training sessions, you want his full
attention and teaching him to look at you is a good way of distracting
him from a situation that may upset him and helps you keep him calm and
under control.
I love sitting with my pets and staring into their eyes. It's a fun game my dogs enjoy and they can only hold out for 15 seconds or so before they start wagging their tail so hard their entire body moves. Of course, you should never give a strange dog direct eye contact. He could take your friendly stare as a challenge.
Pets enjoy our company and the sound of our voice. Their world really does revolve around us and they're not about to take their eyes off of us, just in case we might need them. My favorite stare is when they look you straight in the eyes and you see their unconditional love. That's the best stare of all!

Here at the OP Pack, we all know how to use that look to let Mom know that we want to go outside, we want a tummy rub, we need our dinner, we want to play, and so on. But one of us is truly the Master of "The Stare". With those eyes, this pup can convey SOOOOO much. Can you guess which of us it is?

Do you recognize these eyes? |
Of course, you do, it's Mr. Blue Eyes, Phantom.
The "But I don't want to eat" stare. |
The "I love you too, Mom" stare. How about a cookie? |
Mom hopes she sees this stare for a long, long time.
Woos - Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning
The wisdom of old age. Nina has it down to a science also, especially with her daddy.

Beautiful eyes and great article! Prancer Pie and Mommy often stare into each other's eyes fur several minutes or more. Often there is facial touching too. Mommy says it's the "look of love". Doesn't it feel pawsome?
ReplyDeleteYou do have great eyes Phantom! I stare at mum because I try and telepathically tell her to "go to the treat cupboard and get a treat for Rubie.....your bestest dog ever!!!!" Sometimes it works.
ReplyDeleteTail Wuggles, Rubie
Phantom has the most beautiful blue eyes.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful eyes they are indeed!!
ReplyDeleteCheers

Clive & Murray
Those are very expressive blue eyes Phantom.
ReplyDeleteThat was a very interesting article. Of course being bassets we are always interested in comments people make about bassets looking sad!
In fact, like you guys, are our eyes are very expressive.
Our humans know when we are sad and anxious (especially Martha in every new situation!)- when we are hopeful for treats/walks and when we just want some fun like tug of war games!
As you know Phantom it takes a lot of work to train these humans up to an acceptable standard!!
Thanks for the article, that was interesting.
love
The dreadful blogging bassets xxx

That is a great stare. The boys stare HH down everyday. They start and do not blink from about an hour before dinner time until Hh puts their food in their dishes.
ReplyDeleteDedication.
Have a great day.
pawhugs, Max
Their eyes show their love too!
ReplyDeleteAww, we love those stares of his, too! We hope to see them for a long time yet, too!

BaaaaaWaaaaah My mom goes Crazy when ERNIE sits at night and STARES at her. She tries EVERYTHINGY and nothing causes him to QUIT it Out! I just Laff my tail off at BOTH of them.
ReplyDeleteCool article. Sometimes I have to use other methods of communication like going over and sniffing my leash and then staring at Mrs. Master. She needs all the help she can get.
ReplyDeletePhantom does have lovely eyes. He seems to know how to work them!
Nora
You do have gorgeous eyes, Phantom! What an awesome article! Thank you for sharing it.

Mom will have to hop over to read all about a cat's stare.
ReplyDeleteHow very interesting about Woo stares. I tell you one thing Phantom...I could get lost in your gorgeous peepers.
Hugs Madi your BFFF
Yep, as soon as I saw those eyes, I knew it was Phantom! He reminds me so much of Jake, my Husky who I lost a year ago. Same beautiful eyes, except Jake had one blue and one brown eye. I hope you have that stare around for a long time, too.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing the article!
We knew just who you were talking about. Mom says it makes her happy when she's knitting or stitching and looks up to see us just watching her. It makes her feel loved. Tsar used to thump his tail just once when their eyes met.
ReplyDeleteMorgan and the Porties
We hope so, too!
ReplyDeleteYou Woos could come give me some lessons because this post was so informative and I'm off to read the rest of the article. I knew you should never stare at a strange dog and that your pup should break contact first to show his submission. Thanks for sharing this and educating some of us dense humans.
ReplyDeleteWags, Noreen & Hunter
I also hope we see that gorgeous stare for a very long time... The most beautiful eyes... Hugs GJ xx
ReplyDeletePhantom, we love your stare too! You have gorgeous eyes and a very handsome face! I watch my mommy too and can tell what she's about to do so I'm always ready for everything!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blue-eyed Phantom!
ReplyDelete#1 was just noticing today how I sneak looks at her when I am eating, as a way to gauge how much I can get away with leaving in my dish (yup!! I am NOT a voracious eater and need quite a bit of coaxing).
Woofs,
Tommy
Pawsome staring Phantom! You hae obviously mastered The Stare! Your eyes are so expressive, so deeply blue, and so beautiful! No wonder your stares are perfect!
ReplyDeleteI am sure you will be giving your mom the "I Love You" stare for years to come!
Suk
Those are such deep eyes...expressive..yes!
ReplyDeleteTucker has a hard time holding my eyes if I stare into his. I think he is still trying to figure out where his "place" is in the "pack". He is learning through Stewie about the play look, the love look, the feed me look...and so on. Growing up puppy there is much to learn!
My mom is going all crazy over these pictures! Of course, my dear pal Phantom has the most handsome, expressive eyes in the world!
ReplyDeleteYour pal, Pip
Phantom has sooooo beautiful eyes!
ReplyDeleteI am sure he tells you all everytime you sees them!
Kisses and hugs
Lorenza
Such gorgeous eyes!
ReplyDeleteNola

ReplyDeleteBenny & Lily

ReplyDeleteKisses,
Stella, Jo and Zkhat
Phantom, Mommy thinks it is also the "how could you possibly say no to these eyes stare?" You are so sweet and we love you.
ReplyDeleteLoveys Sasha
Phantom
ReplyDeleteYour eyes speak a thousand silent words. Your eyes look very irresistable to me.
love
tweedles
Good to see you looking as handsome as always, Phantom. Sorry I have been away so long, my mum is positively useless at helping me blog these days.
ReplyDeleteThe important question is...how long can you resist? :)
ReplyDeleteHowdy Woos, we love the staring eyes post. Your blue eyes are especially amazing. We were told by a trainer once that sometimes dogs get the spooks looking at other dogs with blue eyes. Does this ever happen to you guys? No worries, and love, Stella and Rory
ReplyDeleteWe did guess who belonged to those eyes, we have noticed before. All the Woos eyes are beautiful but Phantom has a gentleness in her look.
ReplyDeleteWhen Bobby came whith all his broken bones and discs out in his back through being beaten, he was growling at me all the time, but there was something in his look and although it took 18 months before he came for a stroke, it was worth it. I am glad I looked into his eyes when he looked into mine.
Of course! In fact, Mum even started reaching a cookie into the screen.
ReplyDeleteAuntie Penny has that stare down. She totally gets whatever she wants from it. Even though most of the time she just politely sniffs it then goes away again.
~lickies, Ludo
We loves Phantom's stare. We thinks he has added a get out of my crate please stare to his repertoire. Hope it works for him.
ReplyDeletePhantom has such beautiful eyes! That's a great article! thanks for the link!
