Awww Monday

Quick update on Misty.  We saw the vet this morning and he confirmed the cyst area was still draining AND infected.

We will spare you what things looked like BEFORE, but here is the area deeply cleaned and irrigated.  A slide of the debris confirmed at least two identifiable bacteria and multiple others.

Misty does not tolerate ANY kind of medication well at all due to her untreatable Inflammatory Bowel Disease and her very odd immune system.  But in this situation she desperately needs an antibiotic.  Dr. B. and I discussed our options.  One of the best choices for most dogs would be a one time injection of Convenia, an antibiotic that would last for 14 days.  But not knowing what impact it would have on Misty's system, we did not go that route since once injected, there is no way to stop it if it affected her negatively.  So she is on a combination tablet of 500 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg of clavamox for 10 days.  If it worsens within that time or doesn't heal after finishing, Dr. B. will have to remove it surgically.

One of two surgical shirts ordered for her yesterday arrived this morning.  It appears to do the trick.  She can't get at the wound and neither can her helpful brother:). And she can be cone-free.  The shirt actually has a piece at the base that is tucked up inside a pouch on the back which can go around her back legs and through her tail.  But the shirt fits well enough without that configuration that she can't push it up like she did with her other shirts.  Fingers crossed this works.

We aren't so sure how Awww worthy this is, but let's join the  Awww Monday Blog Hop sponsored by Comedy Plus.

  13. Misty looks stylish in her shirt, and I hope it gives her chance to heal properly.
I am very glad you didn't go with the Convenia. Most cats and dogs can tolerate it, but there are those it has a terrible effect on. Flynn was ill, we already knew he had hyperthyroidism and were treating him for that. He got a UTI and we saw a locum. She gave him Convenia without telling us what it was. I would never have agreed to it had I known as I had already read about pets who hadn't been able to tolerate it. He started to deteriorate rapidly and when we went back to our own vet he said it had caused the thyroid meds to work against him. He stopped all medication to try and give him chance to recover then tried starting again from scratch. Unfortunately it made him so he couldn't tolerate any medication. He prescribed a different pill which kept his numbers down to a certain extent. Thankfully, no thanks to the locum, he survived for another 2 years.
